Ecuador 0-0 Brazil Player Ratings: Lacklustre Selecao Settle for a Draw in Ancelotti's Debut Game

7 min
Ecuador vs Brazil Player Ratings
  • With this draw, Ecuador remains unbeaten in their last seven matches and is pushing for a top-two finish in the qualifiers.
  • This game marked the first match for legendary coach Carlo Ancelotti as Brazil's manager.
  • This result keeps Ecuador in second place in the qualifiers, while Brazil remains fourth, still needing points to secure their World Cup spot.

Carlo Ancelotti's debut as a Brazil manager ended as a goalless draw as the Selecao were not able to break Ecuador's defence at the Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha in round 15 of the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualification. Ecuador had a good game, taking seven shots in the game, four more than Ancelotti's Brazil. The draw keeps Brazil placed at fourth place in the table with 22 points, while Ecuador remains second with 24 points.

During the early moments of the game, Vinicius shifted his body to the left and then to the right to create enough space to go by Ordonez, who was on the left flank close to the corner flag. However, the centre defender faithfully followed through on his assignment, defending his position before making a timely challenge to win a goal kick.

The first close chance came for the Selecao's around the 22nd minute, when Estevao stormed through to win back possession after Estupinian's too many touches outside the penalty box. The young forward slips a pass to Richarlison, whose shot was cleared by Hinacapie, and Gerson pounced on the loose ball to give a forward-looking pass for Vinicius, whose first-time curling shot from close range was saved by Valle.

Avoiding Alisson's outstretched arm on the way over, Estupinan formed a beautiful cross to the back post. Pacho was there to meet it, but his sharply angled deflected volley went over the crossbar and into a corner. This was the closest Ecuador could come to scoring a goal in the first half.

The second half saw Ecuador evolve in the game and take charge as Brazil was looking more to defend. Before two Casemiro opportunities, one before the half, failed to overcome the Ecuadorian custodian, Vinicius got the game's finest opportunity but was unable to defeat a quick-thinking Valle from close range.

Let's have a look at the player ratings for both sides.
