England vs Wales Player Ratings
  • Ella Toone with a goal and two assists.
  • Wales grab a consolation through Hannal Cain.
  • England into the RO 16 as group runners.

England Women breezed into the knockout stages of the Women's Euro by dispatching neighbours and rivals Wales 6-1. The defending champions didn't even need to get out of second gear as Georgia Stanway opened the scoring with a penalty. Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo all scored in the first half to end the contest. Veteran Beth Mead scored and assisted in the second half as Wales got a consolation through Hannah Cain.

England started the game positively, knowing they needed a win to lock their knockout spot after a slow start. Stanway drew a penalty from Carrie Jones and duly converted it herself in the 13th minute to give them the lead. Toone quickly doubled the lead with a finish from close range. She was the architect for the next two goals as Hemp headed from two yards out and Russo thumped it home before halftime to make it 4-0.

The second half was all about game management from England as the coach made plenty of changes with the round of 16 clash in mind. Substitute Mead scored and created a goal for fellow sub Beever-Jones as England completed the rout. The two second-half goals of England were sandwiched by a Wales goal from Cain, who celebrated wildly after finishing off a sweeping move.
