It was the South Asian derby in the SAFF U20 Championship as the Indian U20 team took on Pakistan U20 in their first game of the tournament. Team India managed a neat win in their first group stage game, although there were a few hiccups throughout the course of the match.

The Blue Tigers started strongly as Gurnaj Singh Grewal launched a beautiful ball over Pakistan U20's defensive line, which was brought under control quite well by Vishal Yadav. The youngster had a bit of luck as the ball ricocheted off Abdul Rehman while attempting a cross and set him nicely through on goal.

Yadav finished at the first post from close range, giving India U20 the lead in just the 3rd minute. Pakistan U20 went all-in after that, as India U20 attempted a low block to see off the rest of the first half. However, this tactic could have proved to be fatal as Pakistan came dangerously close on numerous occasions.

Najeeb Ullah had the best chance to make things level, but a brilliant one-on-one save from Suraj Singh Aheibam kept things safe for the Blue Tigers. The second half saw no change, as Pakistan U20 pushed for an equalizer, but failed to make the most out of their chances in the final third.

The second goal for India U20 came in the 64th minute, through a swift counterattack, after Pakistan were denied a clear handball in India U20's penalty box. Rishikanta Laishram got on the end of a long ball as he flicked it for Omang Dodum, who finished the move with a cute header to double the lead.

They held on to the lead brilliantly, despite Pakistan U20 trying their best to cut the deficit. Their finishing let them down massively when it mattered the most. Omung Dodum made it three from the penalty spot in the 88th minute, putting the game beyond Pakistan U20's reach.

India U20 start their SAFF U20 Championship campaign on a bright note, while Pakistan U20 have been knocked out in a rather disappointing manner.
