Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal Player Ratings: Mac Allister 9.5/10 as the Reds Survive a Breathtaking Anfield UCL Thriller to Stay Perfect in Europe

Anfield delivered another Champions League night for the ages, a breathtaking, seven-goal thriller that had 54,000 supporters simultaneously terrified and exhilarated across 90 extraordinary minutes that encapsulated everything raw, unpredictable and magnificent about European football at its finest. Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool, already perfect in this season’s Champions League campaign, were tested to their absolute limit by an Iñigo Pérez side that refused to accept the role of passive opponents from the very first whistle.

Mikautadze’s stunning fourth-minute opener and Cardona’s composed 29th-minute strike gave Villarreal a two-goal lead that had Anfield stunned into an anxious, disbelieving silence rarely heard at one of football’s most intimidating venues. What followed was a second-half of pure, breathtaking quality, Mac Allister’s brace, Araujo’s stoppage-time header, and Wirtz’s devastating 69th-minute strike completing a four-goal Liverpool response before Oluwaseyi’s 87th-minute finish added the kind of late anxiety that this remarkable evening simply demanded.

Alexis Mac Allister was the undisputed heartbeat of Liverpool’s extraordinary comeback, his 36th-minute and 65th-minute finishes demonstrating the composure, timing and clinical quality that makes him the most complete midfielder in Andoni Iraola’s system. His 9.5/10 rating reflects a match-defining display of the very highest Champions League quality, a performance that dragged Liverpool back from the brink and delivered the platform from which Wirtz and Araujo could complete one of Anfield’s most dramatic European reversals.
