Summary
The UEFA Super Cup 2026 saw Luis Enrique's PSG, who won their second consecutive Champions League title just a few months back, take on Unai Emery's Aston Villa, who are the reigning winners of the UEFA Europa League.
It was expected that Paris Saint-Germain would cake-walk this event too, given the quality of players they have in store. Aston Villa were already weakened by the unavailability of Emiliano Martinez, Ezri Konsa, and Ollie Watkins, which saw Emery field two youngsters in the form of a 17-year-old Brian Madjo and a 19-year-old George Hemmings in attack.
PSG utterly dominated the first 45 minutes, pressing the Aston Villa midfield relentlessly, which couldn't find a way to get the ball into the opponent's half, even after they had won possession. The Parisiens were rewarded handsomely when their press forced Villa to lose the ball again around their penalty area after a good save from Marco Bizot.
Desire Doue latched onto the ball and passed it to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the left, who cut in and hit a powerful strike at the first post, leaving Bizot distraught to put the Parisiens in the lead in the 20th minute.
Brian Madjo came the closest for Aston Villa, as he headed John McGinn's cross just wide after getting in behind the two PSG centre-backs quite well. He got two more chances, but his inexperience at the big stage cost him big time.
However, luck favours the brave, and the teenager scored just before halftime from a brilliant McGinn cross to take Villa level in the game.
The goal before halftime seemed to have rejuvenated Aston Villa, who looked a better side in the second half. John McGinn had his shot saved by Safonov early in the half, and Aston Villa slowly seemed to grow into the game.
However, PSG showed once again why they are the best football club in the world currently, as Ousmane Dembele put Desire Doue through on goal, and the Frenchman curled it with his left foot past Bizot to restore the lead, only to see the flag go up for offside.
A brief VAR check revealed that Matty Cash played Doue onside, and the decision was reversed to award PSG the goal, which sent the PSG players and fans into delirium. Aston Villa came close on numerous occasions but just couldn't turn the ball into the net, resulting in a second successive UEFA Super Cup for PSG.
