PSG vs Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings

Summary

  • Mickey Van de Ven and skipper Romero with key goals for Tottenham
  • Rusty PSG fight back late in the game with goals from Kang-In Lee and Goncalo Ramos
  • PSG win their first-ever Super Cup on penalties.

PSG lifted their first-ever UEFA Super Cup title after snatching it away from Spurs in a thrilling fashion. The Champions League winners left it late to come back from two goals down and then win the game on penalties. Spurs stormed into a shock but a deserved 2-0 advantage as PSG were clearly rusty. Their centre-back pairing, Micky van de Ven and newly appointed captain Cristian Romero, were on target. After being second best for the majority of the game, PSG increased the heat after substitutions as Kang-In Lee scored from outside the box and Goncalo Ramos turned home a header from close range to force penalties. Despite holding the lead for so long, the Londoners returned home empty-handed as PSG showed their class on penalties.

Tottenham started the game in fine fashion as Pedro Porro curled a shot narrowly wide. Tottenham, with a lot of rest and a proper pre-season, looked much fitter and fresher than their opponents, who were rusty. PSG missed their usual speed of play as they recovered from a long season. Tottenham's front two of Richarlison and Mohammed Kudus, in particular, troubled PSG's defence as the Champions League winners found life difficult under Tottenham's press. The Europa League winners took a deserved lead from a set piece as a Palhinha shot found its way to van de Ven, who converted from close range to take a lead into the tunnel.

Spurs started the second half in a similar style as they used another setpiece to double their lead. Porro swung his free kick towards the far post, and the skipper met it with a downward header that hit the side netting after Lucas Chevalier failed to make an easy save. Thomas Frank's side went into their defensive shell after going 2-0 up. They came so close to lifting the title, but Luis Enrique's subs changed the game. Lee scored a scorcher late in the game to breathe some life into it. Ramos then got on the end of a Dembele cross in the 92nd minute to force penalties after the final whistle.

Tottenham brought their A game to the shootout as Dominic Solanke opened the scoring. Vitinha fluffed his lines to shoot wide and hand Tottenham the lead. Chevalier's brilliant save from van de Ven brought PSG back into the contest. Tel erred next for Tottenham, allowing PSG to run away. Nuno Mendes held his nerve to score his penalty and complete a smash-and-grab for PSG.

Here are the PSG Player Ratings from PSG vs Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings.

Goalkeeper

Lucas Chevalier-6/10

Produced a fantastic finger-tipping save to keep Richarlison out in the first half. After making some impressive saves, he let an easy header go past him for the second goal. Made amends with a save in the shootout.

Defenders

Achraf Hakimi-6/10

Spence caused him a few problems as he got on the wrong side of the goal, but his recovery pace came to his aid.

Maquinhos-6/10

The usually calm captain was making wayward passes in the first half and was defensively shaky throughout the game against the dogged forwards of Tottenham.

Willian Pacho-5/10

Made a key block to deny Richarlison and was on his toes all game long against the tricky strikers of Tottenham.

Nuno Mendes-6/10

Lunged into Porro early on and was lucky to avoid a booking. He didn't provide much value in the attack as well. Scored a crucial penalty to win the game for his side.

Midfielders

Warren Zaire-Emery-6/10

Kept working hard to win the ball back for his side, but his attacking forays were ignored by his teammates.

Vitinha-8.5/10

Dictated the game for his side but struggled for form in the first half. Improved massively in the second half to completely run the show. Missed his penalty after a slow run-up.

Desire Doue-6/10

The superstar from the Champions League final had a quiet game as he struggled to find spaces to hurt the opposition.

Forwards

Bradley Barcola-6.5/10

He was doubled up whenever he received the ball, but on transitions, he caused real problems with some fine runs and crosses.

Ousmane Dembele-7/10

Was robbed of the ball too easily a couple of times, but he brought his attack into play with his linkup. His attacking radar was misfiring as he wasted multiple chances in the second half. An inspired cross late in the game led to the equaliser.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia-5/10

Struggled to get going on the night as he lost the ball while trying his signature dribbles. Had half a chance to open the scoring, but he kept it off target.

Substitutions

Fabian Ruiz-6/10

Ibrahim Mbaye-6/10

Kang-In Lee-7/10

Blasted a finish late in the game to cause some drama.

Goncalo Ramos-7/10

Scored a simple header after an inviting Dembélé cross.

Manager

Luis Enrique-6/10

Threw Bradley Barcola onto the pitch alongside Desire Doue as his side needed more attacking options to break Tottenham's solid defence. His side was a yard and a second slower to everything on the pitch as they deservedly fell behind. Salvaged a draw with the help of his solid bench, but it was down to individual quality. Held their nerve to steal the shootout and lift the trophy.

Goalkeeper

Guglielmo Vicario-7/10

Only had to make a regulation save in the first half as PSG's dangerous attackers were misfiring. He was beaten once but was saved by the offside flag.

Defenders

Pedro Porro-8/10

Could've opened the scoring inside the first minute, but he missed his effort by a small margin. Linked up with Kudus and Richarlison brilliantly in the game.

Kevin Danso-7.5/10

Defended the wide channels as Porro stepped up. His long throws caused plenty of trouble to the opposition.

Cristian Romero-8.5/10

Starting his first game as the permanent captain of the club, he was a figure of calm who marshalled the defence expertly. A superb header helped him to a goal as well.

Micky Van de Ven-8/10

Scored his first European goal at the best possible time to open the scoring. He defended his box brilliantly when the tricky wingers took him on. Saw his penalty saves by the goalkeeper.

Djed Spence-7/10

His physicality helped Tottenham win many duels in the middle of the park. His shot led to the opener for his side in the first half.

Pape Sarr-6.5/10

Made a lot of meaningful recoveries for his side and set them on multiple counterattacks. His tackling was particularly impressive.

Substitutions

Archie Gray-6/10

Dominic Solanke-6/10

Mathys Tel-6/10

Despite a slow run-up, missed his penalty.

Lucas Bergvall-6/10

Manager

Thomas Frank-8/10

Opted for his favourite three at the back on his Tottenham debut, keeping PSG's dangerous attack in mind. His side maximised the conditions by taking advantage of setpieces and their preseason match fitness as they took the lead and cruised through the game. A late rocky spell saw his side lose focus and go to penalties. They lost the game cruelly on penalties but the coach can be proud of their efforts.
