Real Madrid 4-1 Leipzig Player Ratings: Arda Güler Took Centre Stage Once Again as Los Blancos Maintain Their 100% Record in the UCL League Phase with a Win

Summary

  • Bernardo Silva put Real Madrid in the lead just before halftime, being the fastest to react to a goalkeeper mishap.
  • Arda Güler finished from close range in the 52nd minute, set up by Kylian Mbappé with a header, and the Frenchman scored himself in the 83rd minute.
  • Tidiam Gomis pulled one back for RB Leipzig in the 85th minute, but Yan Diomande restored Los Blancos' three-goal lead in the 87th minute.

On the back of their monumental comeback against AS Roma, Mourinho's Real Madrid hosted Leipzig in their third league phase match of the new UEFA Champions League season. Leipzig were in search of their second win of the league phase, but overcoming the European giants was always going to be a difficult task.

Antonio Nusa was a real headache down the right flank for Fede Valverde, and was arguably the best player for RB Leipzig in the first half. Rômulo's low effort was saved exceptionally well by Thibaut Courtois, before denying Christopher Nkunku in a one-on-one situation in the 41st minute.

It was Real Madrid who ultimately broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute, as Valverde's cut-in was met by Arda Güler, but his effort was saved by Maarten Vandevoordt initially. However, the ball slipped through his legs beyond his peripheral vision, and Bernardo Silva was the first to react to toe-poke it into the net.

Los Blancos came out with a vision to kill off the game early in the second half, and they executed their plan within the first seven minutes. Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr. had a nice exchange on the left flank before the former crossed it in for Kylian Mbappé.

The Frenchman headed back into the area for Arda Güler to slot home with ease, doubling the lead for the hosts. Kylian Mbappé put his name on the scoresheet with a beautiful curler from outside the box in the 83rd minute, putting the game to bed.

However, RB Leipzig weren't done yet, as Tidiam Gomis pulled one back just a couple of minutes later for the visitors. Yan Diomande followed up with an even better strike in the 87th minute to quash any hopes of a Leipzig comeback.

Real Madrid held on to their lead despite efforts from Leipzig to make something happen, which proved to be a good litmus test before facing one of the best football clubs in the world currently, FC Barcelona, in the Clasico on the weekend.
