Auckland City FC had a rough beginning to their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign for all the wrong reasons in their clash against Bayern Munich. The New Zealand representatives were given an absolute humbling by the Bundesliga giants, falling down to a 10-0 defeat in their opening game. This allowed Auckland City to set an unfortunate record for the most goals conceded in a single Club World Cup game in its history.
The Navy Blues have only been a football club for the last 21 years or so, having been formed on 3rd February, 2004. They might have dominated the New Zealand football or even the OFC (Oceania Football Federation) scene, but received a major reality check in the Club World Cup. Auckland City have an interesting history behind them, as we take more of a closer look at them.
Auckland City Key Facts

History of Auckland City
Auckland City claims that the club's roots actually stretch back to the Jadran Yugoslav Sports Club that operated in New Zealand in the 1950s and also the Central United FC side, which is currently competing in the Northern Conference League in New Zealand and was formed in 1962. Auckland City are actually a sister club of Central United, but have enjoyed a lot more success over the last two decades than them.
Auckland City have dominated the New Zealand amateur club football scene over the decades, having won the New Zealand National League title on a number of occasions, including twice over the last three years. They have also dominated the OFC Champions League, having won it over 10 times, including for the last four years since 2022. The Navy Blues are currently ranked in 392nd place in the FIFA Club World Ranking, being the highest-rated New Zealand club in the tournament.
Moreover, the New Zealand giants have represented their club at the international stage on multiple occasions. They have participated in the FIFA Club World Cup on 13 different occasions since 2006. They received the bronze medal in the Club World Cup in 2014 and even finished in fifth place in the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup as well.
The Navy Blues have also worked hard to improve their youth football scene to help the budding footballers of New Zealand get a proper platform to soar. Their youth team has won the New Zealand National Youth League title five times in the past, and they have maintained a well-oiled youth academy system over the last few decades.

Auckland City FC Rivalries
Auckland City have formed a number of intense rivalries with some New Zealand football clubs over the last few decades. The first, and potentially the fiercest rivalry, is with Waitakere United FC. The Navy Blues have been rivals with the club since 2004, mostly because of the animosity between the neighbouring cities of Auckland and Waitakere City. The first meeting between Auckland City and Waitakere City FC took place on 21 November 2004, when the Navy Blues went on to get a 3-1 win. They have since gone on to have 62 competitive meetings against each other, in which Auckland City have won 34 games and lost 15 times.
Auckland City were also placed in a rivalry with Auckland United FC, which was only created back in 2020. Since then, the two have started butting heads in the New Zealand Northern League in an attempt to earn bragging rights for their fans. This inner-city rivalry has resulted in quite a few feisty encounters over the last few years, with the Navy Blues normally being the dominant side for the same.
Auckland City also shares a rivalry with Wellington Olympic, which is one of the oldest football clubs in the country. The Greeks were formed way back in 1953 and Auckland City's rivalry with them might date back because of their roots in the Jadran Yugoslav Sports Club. These two have mostly faced off against each other in the Mediterranean Cup over the last few years, where the Navy Blues have had a lot of success.
Derbies
Auckland City are currently entangled in quite a few derbies, which they play in every now and then. Their fiercest rivalry is definitely with rivals Waitakere United FC, with this being labelled as the ‘Auckland Derby’. The name for this derby comes from the fact that both Auckland and Waitakere City are neighbors, with this particular derby almost being a ‘fight’ to determine which of the two cities is the stronger footballing power. Auckland City have, of course, dominated this derby over the last few decades by winning the majority of matches.
Auckland City have also formed the Dominion Road Derby with Auckland United since the latter's inception in 2020. The name for this derby pertains to the Dominion Road in Auckland, which is a major arterial road that is known for their range of Asian cuisine restaurants, vibrant multicultural atmosphere and also being a major transport route in the city. The Navy Blues have mostly dominated this derby as well.
Auckland City Trophies and Achievements
Since being formed as an amateur football club in 2004, Auckland City have kept their city's name in shining spotlight by winning a plethora of different trophies in their history. They have actually bagged 48 trophies in the last 21 years, averaging more than two trophies won per year. The Navy Blues have shown their domination at the continental stage by winning the OFC Champions League title four straight times from 2022 to 2025.
They have also dominated the New Zealand National Football League and New Zealand Football Championship to maintain the reputation of New Zealand's strongest operating club. Auckland City FC have also participated in the FIFA Club World Cup 13 times in their history, getting a bronze medal in 2014 as well.

Future Goals
Even though Auckland City sustained an embarrassing 10-0 loss to Bayern Munich in their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup opener, they will not be dismayed by it. The club are still trying to build a sense of professionalism in New Zealand football and will be aiming to become a well-functioning, professional club. A major future goal for the Navy Blues remains their attempts of being able to convert their players into full-time employees and ensure that they will not need to do other jobs for their earnings in the future anymore.
Moreover, Auckland City FC will also be gunning to strengthen their squad to have a stronger showing in the future editions of the Club World Cup. They are already dominating the New Zealand and OFC football scene, but will be eager to work hard on youth development and potential employment of more quality managers in the future to help the Navy Blues perform at a higher level against quality European opponents.
