The Curacao National Football Team is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the expanded format of the FIFA World Cup qualification, and it once played as a unified constituent country part of several island territories as part of the Netherlands Antilles. However, since 2011, Curacao has played under a new constitutional status as a separate constituent country as a member of the CONCACAF, the North American football confederation, and the team became part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Blue Waves topped their qualifying group and booked their place for the continental showpiece, being the smallest nation by both population and area to qualify for the tournament.
Additionally, the national football team is finally stepping out of its status as a Dutch colony and showcasing its capabilities on the football field under head coach Dick Advocaat. Players like Tahith Chong, Leandro, Juninho Bacuna, and Juergen Locadia are just a few of the great players that are part of the Curacao National Football Team, who have experience playing in the big, reputable European clubs. The Blue Waves are still going to be a mystery team as part of Group E, where teams like Germany, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador will be wary of the threat posed by a motivated and hungry group of players.
Curacao played its first official international game as an independent country against the Dominican Republic in August 2011, which they lost 1-0 away from home. CONCACAF and FIFA recognize the Curacao national team as the direct successor of the former teams of the Territory of Curaçao and the Netherlands Antilles.
The Curacao National Football Team played its first game in April 1924 by the Curacao Football Federation (FFK), and has been an affiliate member of FIFA and CONCACAF since 1932 and 1962, respectively. Curacao played their first international game against Aruba in 1924, a neighbouring country, where the Blue Waves recorded a 4-0 win.
The nation has also participated 3 times in the CONCACAF Championship/Gold Cup, with the first appearance happening in 2017, and its best result came as Curacao got eliminated following the quarter finals in the 2019 edition.
