Not many would have heard about a club called ES Tunis. To this day, probably only a handful (excluding those living in Africa) know about the club, based in Tunisia. However, now the club's name is probably doing the rounds, and that is all thanks to the Club World Cup. Their start to the campaign didn't go as planned, as they succumbed to Brazilian side Flamengo in their first match. Now their next opponent are the hometown favourites, LAFC. So it goes without saying that the club is looking at a very belligerent home crowd who will jeer them during their time on the pitch.

Unlike LAFC, Tunis are a club that is over a century old. It was formed in 1919. The area was called Bab Soulka, and the founders were Muhamed Zouaoui and Hedi Kallel. Those were torrid times as Tunisia was under the French regime. The club could only function under a French national. Louis Montassier came to their rescue, and eventually the club was formed.

ES Tunis: History & Key Facts

Tunis are one of those clubs that were formed in a time of turmoil in Tunisia. There was drama involved in its formation, but now all that is past. The club has reached its 106-year mark from the day it started its establishment. Today, it can proudly boast of being the most notable club in Tunisia and also in Africa in general. ES Tunis history is a matter to understand for the audience.

ES Tunis might be a super club on the African continent today, but their road to formation was a murky one. At one point in time, there were even doubts whether it would be possible for the club to see the light of day. With the Tunisian government being under French control, they needed a French President to get things running. Things at that point looked dicey, but Louis Montassier came to the rescue. He was a member of the French colonial administration, and with his aid, the club came into being. After the club was formed, it selected its initial colours to be white and green. That jersey was eventually changed to red and yellow after it was believed it changed their fortune for the better.

Initially, the club was down on its luck and struggling to survive. However, things changed for the better in 1936 after they qualified for the League of Tunisia. Since then, the club has held its own in Africa. Slim Chiboub needs a special mention in this regard. Chiboub helped Tunis win the Arab Club Champions Cup. This made them the first Tunisian team to achieve such a major feat. The ES Tunis stadium is the Hammadi Agrebi Stadium.

Another person whose contribution to the club cannot be denied is none other than Hamdi Meddeb. His financial contribution to the club and bringing in talent from across Africa made the club what it is today. Nabil Maaloul might be credited with winning that historic treble in the 2010-11 season, but the mastermind behind the curtain was none other than Meddeb himself.

ES Tunis Fan Following

The club's long list of achievements has created a huge fanbase for the club. Despite not being a household name like the clubs in Europe and even America, it still enjoys a huge fan base. The club has over 355k+ followers on Instagram.

Future Goals

As of now, the main goal of the club is to leave their mark at the Club World Cup. The first match didn't go their way, and as such, Maher Kanzari will look to throw the kitchen sink and cause a major upset by defeating LAFC in their backyard. The last match, as we all know, didn't go as planned as the ES Tunis fans would have liked.

The Tunisian powerhouse couldn't put up any sort of resistance against their Brazilian nemesis. They lost the game 2-0 with goals coming in from Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Luis Araujo. In spite of the initial setback, there is still a major possibility to redeem themselves now against America's own LAFC. The club is being labelled as the "dark horse" in this tournament, so there is a belief that they can pull an upset on any day if the opportunity presents itself, so their American foes need to be on guard from the get-go, cause the wounded tiger is always the most dangerous.
