Epic Games Restructures Fortnite as 3 Major Modes Face 2026 Shutdown

Epic Games has confirmed a significant restructure following the news of Fortnite Layoffs announced earlier today. The company will implement its first major workforce reduction by terminating 1000 employees. These employees represent 23 per cent of the organization's total staff. Epic will discontinue three Fortnite game modes to support ongoing development.

Upcoming Service Terminations

Epic Games is officially retiring three major Fortnite modes in 2026. While the "Main Stage" and "Battle Royale" remain the core focus, the following experiences are going offline:

1. Fortnite Ballistic

• Offline Date: April 16, 2026 (with the v40.20 release).
• Details: The 5v5 tactical FPS experiment is being fully removed. Epic will publish advanced UEFN development tools. They enable the creation of comparable shooter content.

3. Fortnite Rocket Racing

• Offline Date: October 2026.
• Quests: Will be disabled starting next week.
• Content: Official tracks and UEFN templates will be removed in October.

All vehicles and customization items in your Vehicle Locker remain yours and will still be usable in other supported Fortnite modes.

Reason for the Shift

CEO Tim Sweeney explained that the company experienced a decline in user engagement starting in 2025. Epic plans to achieve financial balance by terminating staff members and shutting down business operations that do not generate sufficient revenue because the company experienced expenses that exceeded its income.
