Road to Vostok Multiplayer: An Extraction Shooter Built on First-Hand Military Experience

5 min
Road to Vostok Multiplayer

Summary

  • Road to Vostok brings a familiar extraction-shooter formula but adds a darker, more intense edge inspired by real military experience, making it feel more frightening than typical genre entries.
  • After multiple demos since 2022, the developers have released a final demo with major gameplay reveals, offering Standard and Supporters Editions and hinting at the game’s future direction.

Another year, another Extraction Shooter, but this time with first-hand army experience, and singleplayer. While traditional mechanics, such as character customisation, respawning, health regeneration, health indicators, and realistic reloads are there, this survival shooter somehow feels different.

The Indie studio released a series of demos since 2022. Two days ago, the developers released a final demo, showcasing key gameplay details. It'll feature two versions: Standard and Supporters Edition. Keeping that in mind, this article will delve into the key details of Road to Vostok and its potential plans.

Road to Vostok: A More Wallet-Friendly Escape from Tarkov?

At first glance at the demo gameplay, you might think that you're looking at a second Escape from Tarkov. Road to Vostok Ltd., an Indie gaming studio, debuted with an extraction shooter, which represents a post-apocalyptic zone, a classic setup. The interesting catch is the map. The storyline progresses inside a border zone between Finland and Russia.

Antti Leinonen, an ex-army officer and a former video game and visual game design teacher, is directly involved in the development of this game. The studio used Godot Engine, a FOSS (Free and Open Source Software), to develop the upcoming title. Meanwhile, according to an X post, the title will be priced at €14,99. Judging the price point, it's quite evident that it's much more affordable than Escape From Tarkov.

With all that controversy between ARC Raiders and Tarkov pricing, gameplay mechanics, and more, it'll be interesting to see how players will dive into the servers once the game goes live.

Will There Be a Road to Vostok Multiplayer Mode?

No, there will likely be no Road to Vostok Multiplayer. The official Steam description suggests this game is a single-player hardcore extraction shooter. Much like traditional multiplayer shooters, it doesn't possess a co-op or PvP feature. The developers are focusing on providing a unique sandbox experience with top-notch realism, which tests your survival skills.

Road to Vostok Gameplay

Road to Vostok features a unique gameplay style, featuring a more realistic approach. As a person who has tried both extraction shooters, I faced a hard time dealing with the gunshots.

The mechanics, however, are quite similar to Tarkov. Those familiar with the EFT UI will feel muscle memory when dealing with Vostok's interface. Here are some key points that'll help you understand the gameplay:

  • FPS mechanics are quite similar to EFT.
  • Features a Run & Gun mechanics.
  • Traders will be pivotal in the game.
  • Gamers need to complete specific tasks to earn currencies and other items.
  • A dynamic Road to Vostok Map with day-and-night cycle. Moreover, it also possesses different seasons, such as Summer and Winter. The official game concepts suggest three places: Area 05 (the southern part of Finland), Border Zone (Finland-Russia crossing), and Vostok (Russian high-risk, high-reward area).
  • Features physics-based loot, where loot always spawns at different places every time you enter the game.
  • Much like Hideout, Road to Vostok features Shelters. This is a safe place to save and store your scavenged loot.
  • Unlike Tarkov, you might decide to either fight against other players with military gear or be a fisherman on an island. You're free to create your own story regardless of which character you choose.

Clearly, the developers have focused more on single-player, survival-based gameplay rather than a fast multiplayer approach to EFT. Moreover, unlike EFT's fictional world, RTV provides a realistic storyline.

When you're entering the servers, you should focus more on dealing with the environmental obstacles, especially in the Border Crossing area. If you're familiar with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series, you might find a similarity with the overall environment.
