The IPL 2026 season is coming towards the end but the BCCI has decided to introduce a new set of guidelines which bans the players to wear smart sunglasses in the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA).

initially, there were speculations about the ban of sunglasses in the IPL, however, it is only limited to the PMOA. These rules for BCCI sunglasses ban were already provided to the teams back in May 18, before the IPL 2026 playoffs. However, now, they are out with the news outlets as well. These protocols have been introduced after the ongoing season of IPL has witnessed violation of rules several times.

Why Did BCCI Ban Sunglasses In IPL?

According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI has given a warning to the IPL teams for not using smart sunglasses in the tournament's PMOA. The board believes that the smart goggles have advanced communication and include features like live streaming, audio and video calling options, and sending and receiving text messages, via mobile data or Wi-Fi.

According to the the PMOA standards, these glasses are classified as a 'Communication Device' and an 'Audio/Video recording device'. Such features can break the protocols for the playing area. The BCCI's Anti-corruption unit has taken note of this development and thus, has banned its usage in the league anymore.

The IPL sunglasses ban has come into the media when only two matches are remaining in this season. The GT vs RR Qualifier 2 will be played on May 29 at New Chandigarh while the final will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on May 31.

A Controversial IPL Season

The IPL 2026 has been a season of controversies which have affected the reputation of the league. In a generation where social media is ruling the internet, cricket has also faced the consequences. Players have been making reels and videos for their own social media content while travelling with their respective teams.

As all the players and teams are quite famous, it has attracted a huge viewership. However, that also questions the protocols followed in the biggest cricket league in the world. The players' girlfriends were constantly on the camera and there were doubts of them getting involved in sensitive areas related to the selection of teams.

On some cases, players like Riyan Parag and Yuzvendra Chahal were even caught vaping, despite e-cigarettes being banned in the country. Chahal, who is a legend of the league and a player with the most wickets in IPL, was seen vaping inside a plane, clearly violating the aviation standards and protocols.

After all these incidents, IPL new rules were introduced by the BCCI which banned players' girlfriends from travelling with the team and staying in their hotel.
