Impact Player Rule

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is always known for providing entertainment to the cricket fans around the world, which is why it is known as the biggest cricket league in the world. Since it's inception in 2008, IPL has seen a lot improvements in terms of games and additions into the league. However, a new rule, Impact Player Rule, introduced by the BCCI in 2023 created the IPL more interesting.

The IPL impact player rule allows teams to substitute one player from their starting Playing XI with one of five named substitutes during a match at innings break, end of over, or fall of wicket. The substitute can bat and bowl their full quota of four overs, while the player who will be out takes no further part in the rest of the game.

However, in the IPL 2026, during the match between RCB and LSG, fans may have question in mind regarding, can captain be impact player in IPL, after there was possibility to see Rishabh Pant captain as impact player.

Can Captain Be Impact Player in IPL?

As per the IPL impact player rule, there is no where mentioned that it restricts captain to announce himself as an impact player in a match. A captain is allowed to use the Impact Player rule to substitute themselves out of the match, although they cannot return to play any further part once replaced. While this step is technically allowed and this tactical decision will replace the captain with a player from the designated substitute list.

However, this step of captain to be an impact player could only be seen when the skipper has suffered an injury during the match and require another player to replace him to have depth in the Playing 11, where another Stand-in Captain will be taking charge of the game. Moreover, it has never happened that captain is used as an impact player in IPL.

Future of Impact Player Rule in IPL

As of the IPL 2026, the Impact Player rule is confirmed to remain in place until at least 2027. However, many IPL captains like Axar Patel and Shubman Gill have opposed against this rule particularly, mainly stating that it allows teams to ignore true all-rounders in favor of specialists as well as an extra player reduces the necessary skill. However, there is nothing can be done in next season to omit this rule but after IPL 2027, there are chances that a step can be taken against this rule.
