Punjab Kings started their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign with a three-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in their tournament opener on March 31. However, despite the win, PBKS suffered a huge blow as their skipper, Shreyas Iyer, sustained a hand injury during the second innings of the match. Being one of the best batsmen in IPL, Iyer holds a lot of importance for the Kings. He played a key role in his team's superb run to the final last year and will be looking to go one step ahead this time around. However, Shreyas Iyer injury has made the fans wondering if he will be able to feature in PBKS' next match or not.

Is Shreyas Iyer Ruled Out of Next Match?
Shreyas Iyer incurred the injury while Punjab Kings were chasing a modest target in the second innings. The right-handed batter, who was at the non-striker's end, got hit on the wrist by a powerful shot from his partner Cooper Connolly, who was making his IPL debut. The impact of the shot was so strong that Iyer fell on the ground and looked in a lot of pain. The physios rushed in to attend the skipper on the field.
The incident happened during the 12th over of the second innings of the PBKS vs GT IPL 2026 match, and the play was also halted for some time while Iyer was receiving the treatment. Despite the discomfort, the star batter chose to continue. However, his stay couldn't last long as he was dismissed right in the next over by Prasidh Krishna. Iyer's injured hand was also covered when he came for the post-match handshakes.
Coming to his availability for the next match which is on April 3 against the Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal confirmed during the press conference that Iyer is fine and ready to play the next match.
“He is absolutely fine. Nothing is there,” Chahal said at the press conference after the match.
PBKS Start IPL 2026 With a Win
Gujarat Titans were asked to bat first, after which they managed to put up 162 runs on the scoreboard. They started well, but the middle order couldn't score runs at a good pace. Also, Punjab Kings bowled really well to restrict GT on just 162 runs. Vijaykumar Vyshak was the star bowler for Punjab who picked up three wickets while conceding just 34 runs in his four-over quota.
Punjab Kings, in response, despite Shreyas Iyer injury, chased down the target successfully, finishing at 165/7 in 19.1 overs to win the match by three wickets. With this win, the Kings have moved ahead of the Titans in the PBKS vs GT H2H record. Debutant Cooper Connolly played an unbeaten 72-run knock and finished the match for the team with a four. He was also named Player of the Match for his match-winning knock.
