New MI Openers Again in IPL 2026: Know Reason

2 min
New MI Openers

Mumbai Indians have once again tried a fresh opening combination in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), catching fans off guard ahead of today's clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With former skipper Rohit Sharma still recovering from a hamstring injury, MI were forced to rethink their top order.

In his absence, the team has turned to Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks at the top, with Jacks making his first appearance of the season. The big talking point, however, remains Quinton de Kock's absence despite being a regular feature earlier.

Why Quinton de Kock is Not Playing Today?

The Quinton de Kock replacement has become the key reason behind the new MI openers today. Ryan Rickelton has come into the XI in place of De Kock, though there is no official confirmation yet on whether it is tactical or injury-related.

Interestingly, former SA pacer and IPL commentator Dale Steyn dropped a big hint after the toss. Speaking with Mayanti Langer and Aakash Chopra, Steyn revealed that “Ryan wasn’t supposed to play today and was in the gym in the afternoon,” indicating a last-minute change in the playing XI. This strongly suggests that De Kock’s absence could be due to a sudden issue, possibly a niggle or fitness concern, forcing MI to bring Rickelton in at short notice. However, no announcement was made by the franchise regarding that.

How Has Quinton de Kock Performed So Far in IPL 2026?

Quinton de Kock, one of the best wicket keeper in IPL, has made a strong impact for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 despite limited opportunities. The left-hander has played just three innings, scoring 132 runs at an impressive average of 66.00 and a strike rate of over 160.

His standout performance came in a high-scoring clash where he smashed a brilliant 112 off 60 balls*, registering a century in his first-ever appearance of the season. That knock not only anchored MI’s innings but also placed him among the rare players to score IPL centuries for three different franchises.
It would be interesting to see if the MI management will bring back de Kock in the upcoming matches or will stick with Rickelton for the rest of the tournament.
