2 Reasons Why DC Chose Pathum Nissanka Over Prithvi Shaw

Delhi Capitals’ team selection raised eyebrows ahead of their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against Rajasthan Royals, as Pathum Nissanka was preferred over Prithvi Shaw in the playing XI.

The decision came after youngster Sahil Parikh was ruled out due to injury, forcing DC to reshuffle their top order. As confirmed at the toss by DC captain Axar Patel, Nissanka replaced Parikh, while the overseas combination meant that David Miller had to sit out.

The Sri Lankan opener is an active all-format player for his national side and was bought by DC for INR 4 crore in the IPL 2026 auction. He is amongst the best openers in the world right now.

   His experience at the highest level gives him an edge over Prithvi Shaw, who has largely been limited to domestic cricket in recent times and has struggled to cement his place in the XI. Additionally, Nissanka has already shown promise at the top alongside KL Rahul earlier this season, indicating management’s trust in his ability to handle pressure.

2. Promised Aggressive Intent - Another reason in the Pathum Nissanka vs Prithvi Shaw debate is the intent. Pathum Nissanka is known for his aggressive yet composed approach in the powerplay, something DC desperately need after inconsistent starts. In a format where starts define outcomes, DC clearly leaned toward a more reliable and in-form overseas option.

   On the other hand, Prithvi Shaw might be one of the most dangerous batsmen in IPL but could be a risky option at this point given Delhi's delicate position in the IPL points table.
