Why Ajinkya Rahane is Not Opening Today in CSK vs KKR Match?

The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season continues to bring unique tactical changes in every match, and the clash between the Chennai Super Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders saw one such move.

As KKR was about to start the chase, many expected Ajinkya Rahane to open the innings as he has done throughout the tournament. However, KKR went with a different combination this time around. Surprisingly, Sunil Narine walked out to open alongside Finn Allen, which clearly showed the team's intent to go aggressive right from the start.

Why Ajinkya Rahane is Not Opening Today?

The decision behind Ajinkya Rahane not opening in the CSK vs KKR IPL 2026 match is that the team wanted a quick and attacking start in the powerplay, and Sunil Narine is known for his aggressive batting in the first six overs. Promoting Narine allows KKR to take advantage of fielding restrictions and put pressure on the bowlers early.

The change in KKR openers 2026 meant that Narine and Allen faced Khaleel Ahmed and Anshul Kamboj in the powerplay. However, both of them were dismissed inside the powerplay, which means the new plan didn't go as planned.

Rahane, meanwhile, is more suited to anchor the innings as he has been amongst the best batsmen in IPL. By pushing himself down the order, the skipper has kept stability in the middle overs while going all-out in the powerplay.

The move to change the Ajinkya Rahane batting position didn't work out well for the Knight Riders as he was dismissed for 28 off 22 balls. The right-hander batted at No. 3 and was dismissed by the left-arm wristspinner Noor Ahmad.

Mixed Run for Ajinkya Rahane

The Kolkata Knight Riders skipper has had a mixed run in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Leading the side after being retained ahead of the season, Rahane has been under pressure, especially after KKR's inconsistent run in the tournament so far.

Talking about his batting performances, he has played a few useful knocks but hasn't been very consistent. The right-handed batter has batted in five innings so far, managing to score 152 runs.

Rahane is one of those players who has been playing the IPL for several years now. He is amongst the top ranked players in the list of most runs in IPL. KKR will hope their captain to lead from the front if they are to make a comeback.
