Akeal Hosein Dropped From CSK's Match Against MI? Know Who Replaces Him

3 min
Akeal Hosein

Chennai Super Kings made a notable tactical change for their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The five-time champions decided to leave out the left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein despite his strong performances this season.

The decision came as CSK were asked to bowl first after MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss. Both teams are missing big names like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, who are still recovering from their injuries.

Why Did CSK Drop Akeal Hosein vs MI?

Akeal Hosein’s exclusion appears to be a purely tactical call rather than a form-based decision. The left-arm spinner has picked up 6 wickets in 4 matches this season, including a standout 4/17 performance, making him one of CSK’s more reliable bowlers. However, the team decided to include the left-arm spinning all-rounder Prashant Veer in the playing 11 as Akeal Hosein replacement.

Interestingly, Chennai Super Kings went in with just three overseas players in the XI, keeping flexibility with their Impact Player strategy. Hosein, one of the best T20 bowlers, remained available as an impact substitute, meaning that he could still be introduced depending on match conditions. As expected, CSK didn't bring in Akeal Hosein and brought in Kartik Sharma as the Impact Player.

Despite being an expensive buy, Kartik hasn't had a good tournament so far. He has scored just 72 runs in the tournament at an average of 15. The right-hander came in to bat at No. 4 as CSK aim to give their youngsters more chances.

Why Did CSK Go With 4 Pacers Against MI?

The MA Chidambaram Stadium is known for its spin-friendly surface, but CSK went with four proper seamers and only one quality spinner against the Mumbai Indians. The strategy worked well for them in the CSK vs MI IPL 2026 match.

The four CSK pacers bowled 14 overs combined and picked up five wickets, while conceding only 97 runs altogether. The only bowler with an economy rate of more than 10 was Prashant Veer, who leaked 25 runs in just two overs, while going wicketless.

Both CSK and MI are amongst the best teams in IPL but are struggling this season. Both are at the bottom half of the IPL points table and are desperately looking to change their fortunes.
