Alphonse Areola Injury and His Expected Return for West Ham

Alphonse Areola injury: A crucial blow to West Ham’s European hopes

West Ham United suffered a heart-breaking defeat in their previous Premier League fixture against Newcastle United at St. James Park. After initially leading the games 1-3, the hammers faltered big time as the Toons came from behind to snatch all three points on the day leaving the Londoners shocked and grieved through a 4-3 win.

However, an unexpected loss wasn’t the only concern that West Ham had to deal with that day. Their first-choice goalkeeper Alphonse Aerola was taken off during halftime due to an unspecified injury scare. Aerola was replaced by the Hammers’ substitute goalkeeper Lucas Fabianski.

Had it been three points and a win for West Ham on the day against Newcastle, it could have made Aerola’s departure at halftime slightly less worrying. However, the fact that they lost the games from a winning position and that too against a team they are competing for the European spots could further dampen the team spirit as their first choice man between the sticks wouldn’t be available for them in their next Premier League game.

West Ham United’s manager David Moyes expressed his thoughts regarding Alphonse Areola’s injury scare and his availability for their mid-week fixture against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The 60-year-old reportedly stated –

“Alphonse has hurt his groin. We are hopeful that it’s not too serious, but he won’t be available on Tuesday night (against Spurs).”

Areola has played 27 out of West Ham’s 30 matches in the 2023-2024 Premier League season. He’s been their go-through man between the sticks. He has made some impressive saves for the Hammers in the recent past keeping them in games during crucial junctures of the season. He has had four clean sheets to his name for the club in this league campaign. His absence would require Lucas Fabianski to step up for the Hammers against Spurs.
