WATCH: Antoine Griezmann has mocked Alexis Sanchez after his missed penalty

Atletico Madrid knocked out Inter Milan after a dramatic penalty shootout to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Inter Milan who won the first leg 1-0 at home, took the lead at the Metropolitano Stadium and appeared to be on course to reach the next round of the competition.

French talisman Antoine Griezmann was quick to score an equaliser before Memphis Depay found the back of the net in the 87th minute to level the tie 2-2 on aggregate and force the game into extra-time.

The additional 30 minutes couldn’t decide the fate of the night and the match ended in a penalty shootout where Atletico’s Jan Oblak made two crucial saves against Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen.

Inter Milan’s Yan Sommer managed to keep out Saul Niguez’s effort and relied on Lautaro Martinez to keep the hopes alive but the match ended with Inter missing three of their five penalties.

It was Diego Simeone’s side who held the nerve last night and edged past Inter Milan to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

Home advantage turned out to be pivotal for the Spanish giants who have won 19 of their 21 fixtures at the Metropolitano in all competitions this season.

What derogatory term has Griezmann used against Alexis Sanchez?

The World Cup-winning attacker was substituted after the full 90 minutes and couldn’t participate in the action-packed penalty shootout.

But the former Barcelona attacker was caught celebrating on the touchline when Alexis Sanchez missed his penalty. In one clip, he was seen telling fellow teammate Rodrigo de Paul in Spanish, ‘es un cagón, el chileno es un cagón’, which translates to ‘he’s a coward, the Chilean is a coward’.

‘Cagon’ is a word in Spanish often used as a derogatory term for someone who’s afraid or faint-hearted.

Diego Simeone was overjoyed as his team beat the odds, showcasing their determination and fight on the biggest stage of European football.
