Atletico Madrid vs Valencia Preview

  • Tournament: LaLiga.
  • Date: Sunday, September 15.
  • Kick-off Time: 7:00 PM GMT.
  • Venue: Civitas Metropolitano, Spain.

Third-placed Atletico Madrid will host rock-bottom side Valencia in game week five of the ongoing LaLiga season. The hosts will look to keep up pace with league-leaders Barcelona and arch-rivals Real Madrid, while Valencia will be desperate to move out of the relegation zone.

Atleti will enter this game on the back of a decent start to their campaign. They are currently unbeaten in their four games, securing two wins and two draws. Diego Simeone’s men have defeated last season’s surprise package Girona as well as Athletic Club, but have only managed draws against Villarreal and Espanyol. The Argentine will look to guide his men back to winning ways in the next one.

Valencia, on the other hand, have made a worrying start to their campaign. They lost their opening three games before finally picking up a point in their draw against Villarreal last time around. Manager Ruben Baraja will look to set his team up in a way that they can snap out of their poor run of form and facing one of the division’s top teams will surely be good motivation.

That being said, let’s take a look at the team news from both camps.

Atletico Madrid vs Valencia Team News

Manager Simeone has already had a week with three games in it and has rotated his starting XI quite a bit in that phase. He fielded a strong lineup in the last game with most of the stars starting, with some key players coming off the bench as well. New signing Conor Gallager was handed his first start in the last one, while Simeone continues to favour Julian Alvarez despite his slow start.

Baraja, on the other hand, has largely stuck with the same starting XI so far this season and has opted to go for a classic 4-4-2. Giorgi Mamardashvili will look to have another good season between the sticks, while Hugo Duro continues to lead the line with great success. Skipper Pepelu was the Player of the Match in their last game and the rest of the squad will look to him to lead from the front.

The Frenchman has made a positive start to the season and his contributions have been key to where the team are currently in the table. He provided an assist in the first game against Villarreal, followed by one goal and one assist in a 3-0 win against Girona. Closing in on 400 appearances for the club with 182 goals and 86 assists to his name, Griezmann is one of the best players in their history and will look to lead his team to glory this season.

Hugo Duro (Valencia)

Duro has made a decent start to the current campaign despite his team not being able to match his performances. He scored in the season-opener and also in their last game and will look to carry on in the same way. Duro bagged 13 goals and four assists in LaLiga last season and will look to emulate those numbers this time around.

The way the two teams have started their respective seasons, Atleti seem the clear favourites, plus they also have the advantage of playing at home. These factors should make it a fairly easy job for Simeone’s team which is stacked with talent in most positions.
