Huddersfield vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Preview

In a battle of two relegation-threatened sides, 21st placed Huddersfield Town will host 23rd placed Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Championship on Saturday, February 3.

Hosts Huddersfield enter this contest following a dismal run of games. They have won just once in their last 10 across competitions, losing five times and drawing four times. The Terriers have scored just four goals in their last five games as they have been ineffective in the final third. The team also seem to be stuck in a rut, with each of their last three games ending in draws. Their visit to Queens Park Rangers last time out ended in a 1-1 draw and they will look to do one better next time.

Wednesday, on the other hand, are in a much better place in terms of form, if not the league table. They have won four of their last 10 games, losing four times and drawing twice. After their rampant 4-0 win over Cardiff City in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup, the Owls have just thrice in their last four games. Their last outing was a goalless draw against ninth placed Watford, which was a great result for them. Sheffield Wednesday will look to replicate that performance against their next opponents.

On that note, let’s take a look at the team news for both sides.

Team News & Predicted Lineups

Huddersfield

Darren Moore’s side have a clean slate in terms of definite injuries, but do have a couple of players doubtful for the next game. Defenders Brodie Spencer and Michal Helik both went off injured in their last game but it could be precautionary, considering their importance. They could both return to the XI next time.

Meanwhile, the Terriers are fairly clear in terms of suspension trouble as well, with just Tom Lees at the risk of facing suspension.

Moore will likely stick to the combination he has used in the last few games and will hope his players put in another combative performance.

Predicted XI: Lee Nicholls (GK), Brodie Spencer, Michal Helik, Tom Lees, Sorba Thomas, Alex Matos, Jonathan Hogg (C), Ben Jackson, Jack Rudoni, Rhys Healey, Bojan Radulovic.

Sheffield Wednesday

Danny Rohl’s men enter this game on the back of a relatively clean injury list, with just one player on it long-term. Winger Juan Delgado has been out since October last year with a hip injury and has missed over 20 games for his team. His return date is currently unknown.

Meanwhile, Will Vaulks is at the risk of facing suspension for accumulation of too many yellow cards, having already picked up four. Delgado, too, faces the risk upon his return to action.

Rohl is likely to stick with the same XI he deployed in their last game. However, the Owls will have to play as a collective and avoid silly bookings.

Predicted XI: James Beadle (GK), Pol Valentin, Di’Shon Bernard, Akin Famewo, Marvin Johnson, Liam Palmer, Barry Bannan (C), Anthony Musaba, Josh Windass, Djeidi Gassama, Ike Ugbo.

As you can see, there is little to separate Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday. Four of their last five meetings have been draws, with just one win going to the Terries. In fact, the games have been so devoid of action that the last five meetings have seen a total of only three goals.

The upcoming game could prove to be another such encounter, with both sides struggling to find form in the final third. Midfielder Sorba Thomas will be in the spotlight for the hosts, having already bagged nine goal contributions this season.

Their next encounter, too, promises to be a tight game and could end up in a draw. However, considering what’s at stake, both sides may have a proper go and could both end up scoring.

Prediction: Huddersfield 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday.
