Why was Lucas Beraldo given a straight red against Marseille?

Ligue 1 leaders PSG overcame a controversial match to win 2-0 away at Marseille in the French league’s “Le Classique” on Sunday despite playing with 10 men in the squad.

Reason Behind Lucas Beraldo Red Card

Winter signing Lucas Beraldo, who was already on a yellow card challenged Marseille forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang barging the striker towards the touchline and into PSG coach Luis Enrique.

The match official initially didn’t give him a yellow card for his second offense, but then came back after reviewing the VAR footage and opted to send the Brazilian defender with a straight red card.

The officials claimed that Marseille was denied a goalscoring opportunity and the red card was the biggest talking point of the night.

“I don’t usually judge refereeing decisions, especially when there is VAR,” said Luis Enrique.

“The action happened right in front of me, and I didn’t think there was a foul. But I don’t come here to talk about the referee, to comment on his decisions, or to demand explanations.”

Unfortunately, Marseille couldn’t take advantage of the extra man, with Portuguese duo Vitinha and Goncalo Ramos securing the win for the Parisian giants at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday.

Who is Brazilian defender Lucas Beraldo?

The Brazilian centre-back completed his move to the French capital on a five-year contract from Sao Paulo in the January transfer window. The 20-year-old defender, famously known as “The Joker” has a habit of laughing before matches.

Beraldo was a regular starter at Sao Paulo making 52 appearances across all competitions last season, and was part of the Copa do Brasil winning team in 2023. He attracted the attention of a few elite European clubs, like Arsenal and Liverpool.

But PSG ultimately won the race for the young Brazilian and the transfer fee amounted to 20 million euros. Beraldo has already 16 appearances for PSG in all competitions, bagging one goal in the process.
