Former Liverpool sporting director rejects offer to return to the club

According to a report by The Athletic, Michael Edwards has rejected an opportunity to return to Liverpool.

The Reds are set to undergo a host of big changes in recent future. Manager Jurgen Klopp recently announced that he will leave the club at the end of the season, saying that he’s run out of energy. The German manager’s team will also leave with him in the summer.

Moreover, current Liverpool sporting direct Jorge Schmadtke is set to leave the club at the end of the ongoing January transfer window.

Hence, the Merseysiders are in for some big changes and are looking for new personnel. One name they identified for the role of sporting director was Michael Edwards, who worked with the club in the past. However, he has rejected the offer.

Edwards currently runs an advisory service named ‘Ludnautics’. His partner is incidentally, Liverpool’s former director of research Ian Graham. They provide advice and use their skills to help a team’s hierarchy to achieve success on the pitch.

Edwards had left the Reds back in May 2022 and was replaced by Julian Ward. Ward then left the club at the end of last season. The club then brought in Schmadtke, who is now also set to leave.

Hence, it appears the Merseysiders will need to find someone else for the sporting director position. Ideally, one would expect the managerial hunt to succeed the sporting director’s appointment.

Liverpool will hope to sort these appointments quickly as it could also result in speculation around the future of some star players. Mohamed Salah has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia while Virgil van Dijk has also raised doubts regarding his future at the club.
