Will Sergino Dest Play in Copa America 2024? Latest Update on his Injury

The USMT star player Sergino Dest suffered a major injury blow during one of the training seasons with his Dutch club PSV Eindhoven. The 23-year-old left-back is ranked as one of the most talented players of the modern era. The USA national team would have been banking upon his services for the upcoming Copa America 2024.

Sergino Dest has been struck by a knee injury and as been helmed by various reports that it does appear as a major injury blow and is not one of those knocks that can be shrugged off in a couple of months or so. As per the earlier estimates, Dest could be sidelined from the on-filed playing action for about nine months.

The estimated recovery period would see him missing the Copa America 2024 for his country as he may only return to full fitness till the earlier part of the year 2025. His absence will not only be a dampening blow for the USMNT but also for the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven in the remainder of their 2023-2024 Eredivisie campaign.

PSV is currently top of the league table with just four matches to go till the season ends. They look set to win the Eredivisie title this year but Dest’s injury would cause them a certain concern leading up to the next season as it would force them to consider other alternatives for the left-back position and a similar situation would arise for the USA in the Copa America 2024 as well. Sergino Dest played his last competitive match for PSV in the Dutch league against Vitesse on April 13, 2024.

The numbers of Sergino Dest for the United States and PSV Eindhoven so far

Sergino Dest made his debut on the international stage for USMNT in September 2019. He has so far played a respectable tally of 33 games for his country at the highest level. Apart from his defensive contribution, he has also scored two goals for the USA in the matches played. He has also represented the USA’s under-17 and under-20 teams earlier at the youth level before earning his senior call-up.

Dest joined PSV Eindhoven in August 2023, his current contract with the club would keep him there till June 2024. In the 2023-2024 Eredivisie campaign so far he has played 25 games for the Dutch club and has two goals and six assists to his name. In the UEFA Champions League campaign of this season, he has eight outings for PSV in which he registered a sole assist for the club. Dest has been one of the regular starters for PSV since joining the club and has started about 90 percent of the matches he has played in.
