Southampton vs Hull City Preview

Southampton’s bid for Premier League promotion will see them host Hull City in the Championship on Tuesday (Feb 20) as the Yorkshire side makes their trip to Hampshire. Southampton, currently on a run of 11 consecutive wins on home turf in all competitions will look to gain back the momentum having lost to Bristol City a week ago. The hosts have a superior record in the fixture having won 25 of the 61 matches as they look to extend their dominance in the fixture.

Southampton will start the day in the third position in the Championship but have a game in hand over their other opponents Leeds United and Ipswich Town. Russell Martin’s side have been the most in-form side heading into the Championship fixture despite losing to Bristol. They have the best attack from a home side despite playing two games fewer than any other team at home.

Like Southampton, Hull City also march into the match with momentum on their side and have been unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions. Interestingly, Hull have won three consecutive matches on home turf and remains the team in form. Their visits to Southampton haven’t been productive and have never won at St Mary’s Stadium. Hull’s last win on Southampton soil came in February 1951 and will look to end that 73-year wait on Tuesday.

Team News

Flynn Downes, a midfielder on loan from West Ham United, was not available for Southampton to use at The Hawthorns. It has now been disclosed that Downes’ injury is supposed to keep him out until March. Shea Charles, Stuart Armstrong, and William Smallbone in the Saints’ engine room will probably have more opportunities to start games as a result of the 25-year-old’s absence. When healthy, James Bree has been second fiddle to Liam Manning at left-back, but he is still sidelined by a hamstring strain that he sustained in December.

Because Liam Delap is still out with a knee injury, Hull will continue to rely on the offensive prowess of Billy Sharp and January acquisition Noah Ohio. After being substituted out of the game at Huddersfield on Saturday due to an ankle knock, Tyler Morton is doubtful for Tuesday night’s trip to the South Coast. Should the Blackburn loanee be unavailable, Regan Slater and Ozan Tufan may play together in the midfield, with Matty Jacob filling in at right back.
