Despite Iran’s initial favouritism, Syria national football team showcased remarkable resilience, pushing the higher-ranked team to the limits. Iran ranked second in Asia and 21st globally by FIFA, faced the determined Syrian squad positioned at 91st in the world and 13th in Asia.

The match unfolded as a pulsating contest, with Iran taking the lead through star forward Mehdi Taremi’s penalty in the 34th minute. Syria, however, fought back, earning a penalty that Omar Khribin converted, sending their fans into jubilation.

The game took a dramatic turn when Taremi received a red card in injury time, giving Syria a numerical advantage. Despite relentless attacks, Iran held their ground, credited to a “compact and disciplined performance” by Team Melli’s coach Amir Ghalenoei.
