Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney struck an incredible free-kick in their legends game against Celtic at Old Trafford. The 38-year-old put his side in front by dispatching an unstoppable kick from a dead ball from range into the top bin, but the Hoops’ penalty shootout win eclipsed it.
Back at his old stomping ground, Rooney knew he had to make a mark, as the fans waited with bated breath to see their former No.9 grace the sacred turf of Old Trafford again. And he duly delivered, converting a sensational free-kick in the 41st minute to give United the lead in the match.
It also ended a two-year-long wait for a free-kick goal at the stadium, last scored by Cristiano Ronaldo against Norwich in the Premier League. However, this was just an exhibition match, and the drought in official games continues.
Gary Hooper equalized for Celtic after the break, and the match went into the penalty shootouts. The Scottish giants prevailed 5-4, as Danny Webber missed his kick for the Red Devils.
Manchester United return to action on 14 September
Next Saturday, Manchester United will resume their Premier League campaign away to Southampton. It’s been a torrid run for them so far in the new season, beginning with a penalty shootout loss to Manchester City in the Community Shield, and then consecutive losses to Brighton and Liverpool in the Premier League. Pressure is building on Erik ten Hag again, who managed to survive in the job despite overseeing their worst-ever campaign in the competition.
