Why was Axel Disasi’s winning goal for Chelsea dissallowed against Aston Villa?

Chelsea were really close to winning against Aston Villa at Villa Park. It was 90+4 on the stoppage time when Axel Disasi headed the ball into Robin Olsen’s net. The visitors’ bench erupted as The Blues appeared to clinch a victory on their away visit to Birmingham.

However, the referee Craig Pawson was told by the VAR Hub about a possible foul committed by one of the Chelsea players in the goal’s build-up. After examining the situation through a replay monitor, Pawson then decided that Benoit Badiashile committed a foul for pushing Diego Carlos.

Pochettino furious after Axel Disasi’s winning goal for Chelsea was disallowed

The goal was disallowed and the score stood at 2-2 for both teams until the final whistle was blown. During the post-match interview, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino slammed VAR highlighting how it is damaging English football.

“Me and you and everyone in the stadium watching the game,” the Argentinian told TNT Sports. “They didn’t see a foul on the pitch and then VAR changed the decision of the referee. For me that was a normal challenge. The decision was there and that’s it.

“For me it damaged a little bit the Premier League and English [football]. If we want to be the best league in the world it should be protecting the spectacle and the decision.”

Pochettino also talked about another example of when the referee decision has cost Chelsea a significant loss in the FA Cup. “At Wembley for handball was a penalty against Manchester City and the referee didn’t check and the VAR didn’t advise the referee to see the incident.”
