Ajinkya Rahane Returns to Test Cricket, Joins IND vs SL Series

Former India batter Ajinkya Rahane, who was one of the best batsmen in India, is beginning a new chapter in his cricket career as he prepares to make his Test commentary debut during India’s upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka and will be a part of the official IND vs SL commentators. Rahane will join the Sony Sports Network’s panel, with the series scheduled to begin in Galle on August 15.

The 37-year-old recently retired from professional cricket after an impressive career that spanned nearly 18 years from his first-class debut. He will now move into broadcasting, where his experience in international red-ball cricket is expected to add insight to the coverage. Rahane represented India in 85 Tests and finished with 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46. His Test record includes 12 centuries and 26 half-centuries.

One of the biggest highlights of Rahane’s career came during India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia, when he captained the side to a memorable 2-1 Test series victory. Ajinkya Rahane will now bring that first-hand experience to the commentary box as he begins his broadcasting journey.

Ajinkya Rahane is set to take on a new role during India’s two-Test tour of Sri Lanka, with the former batter joining Sony Sports Network’s commentary team for the series. The assignment marks Rahane’s first stint as a Test commentator after he recently stepped away from a playing career.

Rahane said, "I'm excited to make my Test commentary debut for India's tour of Sri Lanka on the Sony Sports Network and Sony LIV. Test cricket is the pinnacle of our sport, and having represented India in the format for so many years, it is a privilege to now look at the game from a different perspective.
I'm looking forward to sharing experiences, breaking down the nuances of the game and offering fans insights into the decisions, strategies and moments that can shape a Test match. I hope to make the broadcast experience more enriching for fans and give them a deeper understanding of what happens on the field."

Rahane recently made his commentary debut during The Hundred 2026 for BBC Sports, and with the opening Test scheduled in Galle from August 15, Rahane will now provide his perspective on the contest as India begin their latest assignment in Sri Lanka.
