Legendary South African Bowler Shatters Records; Becomes First Player To Achieve This Feat

Guyana Amazon Warriors skipper Imran Tahir's best came in the game against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the CPL 2025. The game between the two teams took place at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, on Friday (22nd August).

Tahir's Guyana Amazon Warriors batted first and posted a massive total of 211 runs with Shai Hope (82) and Shimron Hetmyer (65*) hitting brutal fifties. Then, with the ball, they brought their best as the skipper led from the front, rattling the opposition's batting lineup with his skills.

Imran Tahir spun a web around the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons batters and claimed a sensational fifer. He removed Shakib Al Hasan, Imad Wasim, Shamar Springer, Usama Mir and Obed McCoy to return with the figures of 5/21 in four overs, which included one maiden as well.

With his fifer, Imran Tahir became the oldest captain to take a five-wicket haul in T20 cricket. He is also the first player in the history of the format to pick five wickets in the T20s as a leader after turning 40, as he achieved the feat at 46 years and 148 days. Imran Tahir CPL record comes at a time when players have mostly retired from the game. However, he showed why he was regarded among the best spinners in the world.

The legspinner also broke the record of Malawi captain Moazzam Ali Baig, who took a fifer against Cameroon in September 2024 at 39 years. Not only this, he is also now the second-oldest player to take a five-wicket haul in T20S. He joined Tomakanute Ritawa, who took 5/19 against Fiji in 2022 at the age of 46 years and 299 days.

Most Five-Wicket Hauls in T20 Cricket

After his staggering fifer in the CPL 2025, Imran Tahir registered his fifth five-wicket haul in the shortest format of the game. He now joins David Weise, Shaheen Afridi, Lasith Malinga, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the list of top five players with the most five-wicket hauls in T20 cricket.

Overall, Imran Tahir's numbers in the T20 cricket are exceptional. He has featured in 436 T20 matches across different leagues in the world and has taken 554 wickets. He is the fourth leading wicket-taker in the list of most wickets behind Rashid Khan, Dwayne Bravo, and Sunil Narine, all of whom are among the best cricketers in the world.

Ever since he turned 40, he has brought his best. He has played 200 T20s, picking up 266 wickets at a staggering economy rate of 6.86. He has been ageing like a fine wine and is amongst the top performers with the ball in the ongoing CPL. The legendary spinner also led the Guyana Amazon Warriors to the Global Super League title a month ago.
