Fact Check: Is Riyan Parag Sacked From Leadership Role Post IPL 2026?

Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag has been ruled out of the upcoming 50-over tri-series in Sri Lanka after failing to recover in time from a hamstring injury. The tournament will feature India A, Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A. However, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been drafted into the India A squad as Riyan Parag replacement for the tri-series.

The development was officially confirmed by one of the richest cricket boards in the world, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The board also stated that Parag will now continue his recovery under the supervision of the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Some fans were wondering if Riyan Parag dropped from the India-A squad, but the actual reason is his hamstring injury.

Despite struggling with the injury during the IPL 2026 playoffs, Parag continued to lead Rajasthan Royals and featured in both knockout matches. The Royals secured a victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator before their campaign came to an end with a defeat to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 at Mullanpur.

Riyan Parag Injury Update Post IPL 2026

Before Riyan Parag injury setback, he had been appointed vice-captain of the India A squad for the upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka. However, with Parag unavailable, the responsibility of serving as deputy to captain Tilak Varma will now be taken over by Ruturaj Gaikwad, who captained one of the best teams in IPL, the Chennai Super Kings, during the 2026 campaign.

The three-nation tournament is scheduled to begin on June 9, with India A facing Sri Lanka A in the opening match at Dambulla. Following the limited-overs competition, India A will also participate in a two-match unofficial Test series against Sri Lanka A. However, the squad for the longer-format matches is yet to be revealed.

Riyan Parag IPL 2026 Performance

Although Riyan Parag guided Rajasthan Royals into the IPL 2026 playoffs, he had a disappointing campaign individually. The middle-order batter managed 309 runs across 14 matches and crossed the fifty-run mark only once during the season. His contribution with the ball was also limited, as he picked up just two wickets.

Meanwhile, several promising names have earned spots in the India A setup, including Tilak Varma, Priyansh Arya, Ayush Badoni, Prabhsimran Singh and Anukul Roy. However, the selection that has generated the most attention is that of teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

The 15-year-old was just sensational in the IPL 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals, smashing 776 runs in 16 matches. He also delivered standout performances in the playoffs, recording consecutive scores above 90 in both the Eliminator and Qualifier 2. Despite his brilliant 96-run effort against the Gujarat Titans, the Rajasthan Royals fell short of securing a place in the final.
