Is Washington Sundar Out of T20 World Cup 2026? India captain Gives Update

Team India has received a massive boost ahead of their second match of the T20 World Cup 2026 against Namibia as all-rounder Washington Sundar's return to the squad has been confirmed. India captain Suryakumar Yadav provided a crucial update on the all-rounder's return to the team.

Sundar got injured during the first ODI against New Zealand and was subsequently ruled out of the full series. As a result, his availability for the T20 World Cup also remained in doubt as he raced against time to be fully fit. However, there is some good news regarding Washington Sundar injury update.

Is Washington Sundar Fit?

Before India's first match of the tournament against USA, Suryakumar Yadav confirmed that Sundar won't be rushed into the team despite the tournament getting started. During the post-match presentation after India's win against Namibia, Suryakumar gave another important update on the off-spinner, revealing that Washington Sundar “will join us in Delhi”.

Suryakumar's statement clearly states that the all-rounder is fit and raring to go. Washington Sundar return to the Indian team is a big boost to the Men in Blue as he brings different variety to this bowling attack. Not just his off-spin bowling, he is also a crucial contributor in the lower order.

During the first ODI against New Zealand, Sundar suffered a side strain after which he missed the entire series along with the T20Is. While he may not be a part of India's first-choice playing 11, he remains a vital cog in the wheel. Sundar is the only off-spinner in the squad which has some of the best spinners in the world like Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav.

India will play their second match in the T20 World Cup against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, one of the smallest cricket stadiums in India. The Men in Blue suffered a huge scare during the first match against USA and are likely to face a stiff challenge from a determined Namibian team as well.

Washington Sundar's Impressive T20I Stats

Washington Sundar's return will give India more options to consider, however, it is unlikely that he plays this match. The only change for India could be the return of Jasprit Bumrah, who didn't play the first match due to fever.

The left-handed batter has played 58 T20Is so far, in which he has picked up 51 wickets at a staggering economy rate of under 7. His ability to bowl in the tough powerplay overs makes him a useful bowler in T20Is.
