KSCA Introduces 3 New Red-Ball Cricket Rules: All You Need to Know

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has never stepped back from providing good-quality cricket and producing world-class cricketers to the Indian Cricket Ecosystem. Every year, ahead of India's domestic season, KSCA organises the Dr. (Capt.) K. Thimmappiah Memorial Tournament, which is an invitational tournament involving other state association teams in a red-ball tournament.

The KSCA new red-ball cricket rules have come into play from this edition of the K. Thimmappiah Memorial Tournament, and this is not the first time KSCA has introduced some new rules in their own league or tournament, as they did during the KSCA Maharaja Trophy 2026. Which KSCA Cricket Rules Are Enforced in K. Thimmappiah Memorial Tournament 2026-27?

The K. Thimmappiah Memorial Tournament 2026-27 will be played with some of the KSCA new red-ball cricket rules, which will have a positive impact on the overall game. Here are the KSCA domestic cricket rules that are implemented:

1. Over Limitations

There is a limit on the number of overs in a match, where each team can bat for a maximum of 120 overs in the first innings and 60 overs in the second innings. However, if a team does not use all 120 overs in the first innings, 50% of the unused overs will be added to their second-innings quota. This rule aims towards of providing an equal opportunity to both teams and not let any team dominate the other in a single innings.

2. Availability of New Ball

As per the standard Test cricket rules, a new ball can only be taken after every 80 overs in an innings. The second rule is about the new ball, allowing teams to take the new ball after 70 overs, instead of having to wait until 80 overs. However, if a team chooses to continue with the old ball, it can do so only until 90 overs. After that, taking the new ball will be compulsory, which will make the game more competitive and won't favour any single team in the match.

3. Field Restrictions

The last and most important rule is about the field restrictions. If the fielding team in the second innings places most of its fielders on one side of the ground, then after one-third of its maximum overs quota has been completed, only three fielders will be allowed outside the inner circle. This is an important change aimed at preventing the team that is behind in the game from using overly defensive tactics.
