Cricket Canada is back in the spotlight for the wrong reasons, with the ICC initiating a corruption probe tied to events during the recent T20 World Cup. The Cricket Canada controversy gained massive interest following the broadcast of a CBC documentary, “Corruption, Crime and Cricket,” which brought fresh allegations into public view.

The situation escalated after the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit initiated an investigation into their Group D encounter against one of the best T20 teams in the world, New Zealand, where certain moments in the game reportedly raised suspicion. While New Zealand were widely anticipated to win, specific passages from that match have now come under the radar for spot-fixing claims.

According to a report from DNA India, a criminal network linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang may have had a role in influencing the match. The inquiry remains ongoing as authorities are looking to determine any wrongdoing and identify those involved.

What was the Role of Lawrence Bishnoi in Cricket Canada Fixing Scandal?

The documentary claims that Dilpreet Bajwa, who is of Indian origin, was unexpectedly named captain just a few days before the T20 World Cup. It further suggests that this appointment may have been influenced by pressure from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, a criminal group linked to Punjab and Haryana.

It also states that members of this group held meetings at a restaurant in Surrey, Canada, where players were allegedly threatened. According to the report, these threats extended to their families as well, in an attempt to force players to follow instructions related to match-fixing.

Canada's Captain Faces Match-Fixing Claims

Dilpreet Bajwa, a 23-year-old cricketer originally from Gurdaspur in Punjab, India, has also come under scrutiny, particularly for one of his overs in the match against New Zealand. While defending a total of 173, Canada began with Jaskaran Singh and Dilon Heyliger, who together conceded 35 runs in the opening two overs.

Saad Bin Zafar then tightened things up with a wicket and a maiden, and Heyliger followed it up with another economical over, picking up a dismissal and giving away just five runs. However, when Bajwa brought himself on for the fifth over, he went for 15 runs, including a wide and a no-ball. These serious allegations will harm the game’s progress in the country and raise concerns about its immediate future.
