No Bumrah, Abhishek? BCCI Set To Change India Squad For Asian Games

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to send India's 'B' team for the upcoming Asian Games, which will be held in Aichi Nagoya, Japan. The reports claim that the board is not satisfied with the quality of pitches and ground, where the matches will be played.

The decision has come two months after the board had announced a full-strength Indian T20I side to face some of the top cricket teams in Asia. If this happens, the fans might not be able to witness some of the best T20 batsmen like Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Suryavanshi in these games this year.

Will BCCI Change India Squad For Asian Games?

According to ANI's Vipul Kashyap, the BCCI might send a second-string Indian T20I team for the Asian Games in Japan. The decision is influenced by the recent reports which suggest that some of the top cricket boards like BCCI and PCB are not satisfied with the playing conditions at the Korogi Sports Park, where the cricket matches will be played.

While it is not yet official from the board, India's strong bench-strength in T20Is mean that the BCCI can consider sending a second-string side to Japan. Sending the first-choice players to the untested grounds can increase the chances of injuries.

India squad for Asian Games 2026 has some of the top international players like Abhishek Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah and many more. Most of these players are not limited to one format and the board is concerned about their fitness, which might get hampered.

What is Asian Games Pitch Controversy?

The controversy surrounding the pitches and ground to be used in Asian Games escalated when some of the richest cricket boards in the world objected to the playing conditions. The venue where the matches will be played was converted from a baseball to a cricket field in March 2026.

Adding to it, the stadium has hosted just one minor tournament, in May this year. The hybrid pitch square consists of natural grass with polyethylene fibers. The ground also lacks proper infrastructure for an international cricket match. The dressing rooms are too small to accomodate a full squad, which raises further concerns.

Meanwhile, the controversy is not just limited to the ground. The hotel rooms in Nagoya are just too small for elite cricketers to fit in with their large kitbags. The weather plays a big role in the game of cricket and the month of September might coincide with the typhoon, which may further affect the matches.
