Playing XI of India and England for 2nd Test: Know Who's In & Who's Out

India and England are set to play the second match of the five-match Test series on July 2, at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy saw the Three Lions beat the Indian team by five wickets. It was a brilliant batting performance from both sides; however, England emerged victorious, thanks to Ben Duckett’s magnificent century.

The English team will be riding high on confidence after winning the first Test. But they shouldn’t underestimate the Indian team too early. The Men in Blue are expected to make a remarkable comeback in the second Test to keep the competition alive. But they will look to make some improvement in the bowling and fielding department, which mainly became the reason for their loss.

IND vs ENG Playing XI 2nd Test: India Playing 11 (Probable)

The Shubman Gill-led side is likely to make a couple of changes. Shardul Thakur was completely ineffective in the first Test, failing to contribute anything with both bat and ball. Nitish Kumar Reddy is likely to replace him, who smashed a century in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He also picked up some crucial wickets during the series, which makes him a great option to be in India Playing XI 2nd Test.

It was surprising to many fans and experts when Shardul was picked in the first Test ahead of Reddy. Apart from that, India’s pacer Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the second Test. To replace him, the Indian team management might hand Arshdeep Singh his Test debut catch. The left-arm pacer might be effective in the overcast conditions of Birmingham.

England continued their ritual of announcing the playing XI days before the match. The playing XI remains the same as it was in the first Test. Their bowling lineup wasn’t much effective against India’s top-order batter, but it was good enough to get rid of the Indian tailenders in quick time, which indeed brought the difference. The Three Lions will aim to see the same results again with the same squad. But it's not going to be that easy.

Jofra Archer to Miss IND vs ENG 2nd Test

After missing the first Test of the series, England’s star pacer Jofra Archer was included in the squad after recovering from a finger injury. However, despite that, he wasn’t included in the playing XI. Archer’s inclusion could’ve strengthened England’s bowling lineup, but skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum decided to go with the same squad.

Archer was seen in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals (RR), Archer played 12 matches for the franchise, claiming only 11 wickets. He was also quite expensive throughout the tournament, leaking runs at the economy rate of nearly 10. However, he is a different player altogether in Test whites. He, being part of the second Test, could’ve brought some difference in the squad. But he has to wait for the third match of the ongoing IND vs ENG Test 2025 series for an opportunity.

Captain Ben Stokes himself led from the front and was the one who broke many crucial partnerships during the first Test. He later got support from other pacers as well. The Indian team saw a horrible batting collapse in both innings of the match, which shifted the momentum towards the English team.
