Legal Setback for Discarded India Batter Over Missed Court Hearing

Indian cricket team's discarded batter Prithvi Shaw, who was touted as the future of Indian cricket, has only himself to blame for where he is in his career currently. More than his on-field performances, he is known for his off-field antics, which says a lot about his career so far.

After Prithvi Shaw guided India to the U19 World Cup win in 2018, he was termed the next Sachin Tendulkar, who is also known as the God of cricket. He also set the stage on fire in his initial appearances in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Playing for the Delhi Capitals, he brought his brutal best and scored crucial runs for his team in the league.

His heroics in the domestic circuit and league earned him the India cap, and he proved his worth by slamming a century on his Test debut. He could have become one of the best openers in the world. However, his work ethic wasn’t correct, and he was dropped from the side.

Prithvi Shaw Fined For Not Appearing in Court

Shaw was fined INR 100 by the Mumbai court for not appearing to file his response in Sapna Gill's molestation plea. The session court has notably been repeatedly asking Prithvi Shaw to respond to Sapna’s petition. However, the batter hasn't done that yet. During the last hearing, the Indian opener was warned by the court, saying that it was giving him one final opportunity to submit his reply.

Prithvi Shaw still didn’t appear in court or respond and the court fined him on Tuesday (September 9). The judge stated: “Still, one more chance is granted for a cost of Rs 100.” The next hearing is scheduled for December 16, 2025.
On the other hand, Sapna’s advocate Ali Kaashif Khan, was of the opinion that the Indian batter had been deliberately avoiding the judicial process. “This has been his regular way of handling the case despite being summoned many times," Khan told the court.

What is Prithvi Shaw Sapna Gill Controversy?

Prithvi Shaw’s ethics got worse from bad as he started appearing in a lot of news for his antics. One of the major things about him that became popular was his fight with the social media influencer Sapna Gill in 2023. During a party in Mumbai, where Shaw and Sapna Gill were present, some of the latter's friends asked for pictures with the cricketer.

The reports claimed that Prithvi Shaw obliged at first but later declined, and this led to an argument between the two parties. After the party, the fight continued on the road too with Shaw and Sapna’s friends engaging in physical fights.

Shaw’s friend was chased by Sapna and her friends, and they allegedly threatened him and demanded ₹50,000. The police registered an FIR and detained Gill on February 17, 2023, before she was released on bail three days later. However, she shared a completely different story of the incident.

According to her, Shaw himself invited Sapna's friend, and when they asked for pictures, the Indian batter assaulted them. She said that when she intervened, the cricketer physically and sexually assaulted her. She later filed a counter-complaint, charging the cricketer with assault, molestation, and outraging her modesty.

However, the magistrate's court refused to register an FIR against Shaw. They didn’t pay heed to Gill’s complaint and ordered the police to conduct the enquiry. Following this, Sapna Gill moved the case to the session court, which is now hearing her plea.
