Shreyas Iyer to be Next ODI Captain? Sarpanch Sahab Leading Team India Against AFG

This raised speculations about Shreyas Iyer ODI captaincy. The middle order batter was appointed India's T20I captain just a few days ago and was leading the taem during the IND vs AFG 2nd ODI as well.

Shreyas Iyer To Be Next ODI Captain?

Shreyas Iyer stood as India's stand-in captain in the absence of Shubman Gill when Afghanistan came out to bat in the 2nd ODI match. Gill, who scored a brilliant hundred in the first innings of the match, was off the field, probably due to his prolonged stay at the crease while batting.

In a match where temperatures hovered around 40 degrees continuously, Gill batted for more than 40 overs, helping his team to a massive first innings total. He led from the front and top-scored for his team with a fine 154 off just 110 balls.

He was constantly suffering from cramps during this knock and was attended by the physio as he went back to the dressing room. The Indian team management feels that Gill needs some more time to be back on the field, which is why Iyer, the vice-captain, led his troops.

Meanwhile, the selectors and the team management led by Gautam Gambhir have already put their trust on Shubman Gill for the team's ODI captaincy. Given that he is one of the best ODI batsmen currently, his captaincy seems to be safe in this format.

Shreyas Iyer T20I Captaincy Era Set To Begin

The era of Shreyas Iyer India captain in T20Is is set to begin in the upcoming tour of Ireland, which will start from June 26. Iyer's last T20I match was more than two years ago and he wasn't even a part of India's T20 World Cup-winning squad.

However, the selectors put their trust on him for the next cycle, which will include the Olympics and the ICC T20 World Cup in 2028.
