Gautam Gambhir is believed to be the key person behind the decision of Shubman Gill ODI captain of India, according to several reports. However, later, it became clear that Rohit Sharma ODI captaincy is not in danger. Rohit is likely to continue leading India in the 50-over format. Under his leadership, India won back-to-back ICC trophies, the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025.

Even with this success, the BCCI is reportedly backing Gill as the future leader in all formats. Gill has been influential in the leadership role and is likely to be India's next captain for all the formats.
