India’s national cricket team is set to see another big change in terms of leadership roles. Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach, is once again making bold decisions, and it seems like Rohit Sharma's captaincy future is in danger. This time, reports say he is ready to hand over the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill.

Gill is already India's captain in Test cricket. He took over the role just before the beginning of the ongoing Test series in England. Gill has had a brilliant start, and he has been exceptional with his batting performances so far. However, the team management feels that he is ready to take over the ODI captaincy as well.

Shubman Gill ODI Captain of India: Is this True?

According to Dainik Jagran, a top BCCI official confirmed that Shubman Gill will take over from Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain. This decision has come just before the third Test of the England series, which is being played at Lord’s.

Gautam Gambhir is believed to be the key person behind the decision of Shubman Gill ODI captain of India, according to several reports. However, later, it became clear that Rohit Sharma ODI captaincy is not in danger. Rohit is likely to continue leading India in the 50-over format. Under his leadership, India won back-to-back ICC trophies, the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025.

Even with this success, the BCCI is reportedly backing Gill as the future leader in all formats. Gill has been influential in the leadership role and is likely to be India's next captain for all the formats.

With Rohit as the captain, Shubman Gill will return as vice-captain in the next 50-over series. India’s tour to Bangladesh has been postponed, so their next ODI series will be in Australia in October 2025. It was also reported that SLC has requested BCCI for a white ball series in August, which can also see some major changes in the Indian squad.

Gambhir, who is known for making bold calls, seems confident about Gill’s leadership in white-ball cricket too. Gill is not just doing well as a captain; his batting is also creating history. He has already broken Virat Kohli’s highest score as Test captain and Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most runs by an Indian in a single Test match.

Shubman Gill Records

Shubman Gill has been in sensational form in the ongoing Test series against England. He became Test captain after Rohit’s exit and is already making headlines. In just two matches of the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Gill has scored 585 runs. He smashed 269 and 161 at Edgbaston, helping India beat England by 339 runs. This win has leveled the series 1-1. Gill’s leadership is being praised by former cricketers and fans alike.

Gill is currently chasing even bigger records in Test cricket. Some of those records are:

  • He needs 225 more runs to break Don Bradman’s record of 810 runs in a series as captain.
  • He is 390 runs away from Bradman’s all-time record of 974 runs in a single series.
  • If he scores 415 runs in the next six innings, he will become the fastest captain to reach 1000 Test runs, beating Bradman’s 11-inning record.
  • He already has 3 centuries in the series. Only Clyde Walcott (5) and Bradman (4) have more in a single series as captain.

Gill is expected to be the star of the upcoming generation. However, he will only get the ODI captaincy after Rohit Sharma retires from the format. It remains to be seen when he becomes India's ODI captain.
