Shubman Gill To Be Removed From Captaincy

Team India is all set for a massive change in the ODI format. Star batter Shubman Gill, who is the current captain of the team in the 50-over format, is all set to be removed from the role.

Gill was appointed India's ODI captain after Rohit Sharma stepped down from the role. He is seen as the future of India's team and was trusted to lead the team till the 2027 ODI World Cup. But it seems that the selectors are set to take a turn in a different direction now.

Shubman Gill To Be Removed From Captaincy

According to a report in NDTV, the Indian team management is looking for a single player to lead the team in both ODIs and T20Is. As a result, Gill is likely to be removed as India ODI captain.

Middle order batter Shreyas Iyer is likely to take over the role of India new ODI captain now. Iyer, who is currently the vice-captain of the team, might lead the team in both the T20I and the ODI formats.

Opening Quote

"Expect some changes when the new T20 team is announced. We are looking at one player helming both the T20 and ODI sides. Our focus is on both now. The BCCI wants to look at young talent while also giving opportunities to experienced players. Shreyas has done exceedingly well in the last few years; his injuries have been unfortunate," the source was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Closing Quote

Despite being out of the T20I side, Shubman Gill is a vital player for India in the ODI format. He has been one of the best ODI batsmen in the last few years and his numbers are just a proof of his talent.

However, Gill is not a part of India's T20I plans as of now, which has gone against his favor. Since the board is looking for a single captain for both the white-ball formats, Gill doesn't seem to suit the plans.

Shreyas Iyer To Get India ODI Captaincy

The latest move can open the doors for Shreyas Iyer to become India's new ODI captain. Iyer is in sublime form right now and has already proven his captaincy credentials in IPL 2026, where he is leading Punjab Kings. Over the years, he has emerged to become one of the most successful captains in IPL.

Iyer has been in BCCI's plans to lead the team for long time now. He is well suited to captaincy and could lead India in the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 now. While Gill might lose the ODI captaincy, he is likely to remain India's Test captain.
