Team India Misses World Record Despite Posting Mammoth Total in Chennai

The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai witnessed one of the most explosive performance of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 during the IND vs ZIM T20 World Cup 2026 match on February 26. Zimbabwe won the toss and asked India to bat first but they weren't ready for what came next.

The Men in Blue displayed a magnificent batting performance and ended up putting the highest total of the ongoing edition, beating West Indies' previous record of 254 runs which against the same opponents, Zimbabwe. However, the Suryakumar Yadav-led team still missed a world record despite a mammoth total in Chennai.

India Miss T20 World Cup Highest Score Record

India might have put up the highest total of this edition but they fell 4 runs short of the overall T20 World Cup highest total record. The record for the highest total in the T20 World Cup history belongs to Sri Lanka as they smashed 260 runs against Kenya in the 2007 edition in Joburg.

India, with 256 runs, now stand at the second position in this list, followed by West Indies (254), Ireland (235) and England (230). However, this innings will be counted among the list of highest T20 scores. India highest score in T20 World Cup came at a time when they needed this kind of innings the most. Now, the Men in Blue will aim to wrap up the Zimbabwe team on a short total to boost their NRR and strengthen their chances for the semi-final race.

Batting Carnage By Indian team

As mentioned above, the Indian team was given a cracking start by openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, two of the most dangerous batsmen in the world. Samson departed after scoring 24 runs, while Abhishek finally found his rhythm back, playing a 55-run knock off 30 balls, including four fours and four sixes.

Ishan Kishan also contributed 38 runs despite being moved from his usual batting position. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav continued the momentum and smashed 33 runs off just 13 balls. Hardik Pandya (50) and Tilak Varma (44) provided a perfect finish to the team, stitching an unbeaten 84-run stand for the fifth wicket and helping India to put up 256 runs on the scoreboard.
