India’s selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, is likely to hold a meeting by September 3 to finalise the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. The BCCI is expected to announce the selected team shortly after the meeting.

The Afghanistan series will mark India’s return to white-ball cricket following their 1-0 victory in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The opening T20I is scheduled for September 13, with the remaining matches to be played on September 15 and 17. All three games will take place at New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium and are set to start at 7 PM IST.

The Indian selectors are likely to hold a meeting on September 3, 2026, to announce the squad for the Afghanistan series. Varun Chakravarthy is another player who could come back into consideration. The spinner is understood to be fully fit and could return to India’s T20I plans. At the same time, the selectors will closely monitor the fitness of Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Jasprit Bumrah before finalising the squad.

Among the best allrounders in the world, Pandya and Reddy have both struggled with significant injuries recently and have missed a considerable amount of cricket. Their absence has created a problem for India, particularly in T20 cricket, where the lack of a reliable pace-bowling all-rounder can make it harder to maintain the desired balance. Shivam Dube has been given opportunities in that role, but has not fully solved the issue.

A genuine pace all-rounder also gives India greater flexibility to include another attacking spinner such as Kuldeep Yadav. In the absence of that option, Tilak Varma could be asked to contribute more with the ball.

The Indian selectors may opt to retain the squad chosen for the 2026 Asian Games for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan. If that approach is followed, Shreyas Iyer could continue as captain, while several members of the young Asian Games group, including Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma, may keep their spots.
