Sanath Jayasuriya has announced that he will step down as Sri Lanka cricket team head coach after their exit from the 2026 T20 World Cup at the Super 8 stage, where they suffered three consecutive losses. The decision comes after another poor ICC tournament for the 2014 champions. Jayasuriya first joined the side as interim coach in July 2024 and was later appointed full-time in October, with his contract set to run until June 2026.

However, after the recent disappointment, the former Sri Lanka captain, who was one of the best all rounders in the world, has chosen to leave the role earlier than planned. Sri Lanka’s campaign started off well despite a shock defeat to Zimbabwe in their final group game, as earlier wins, including a strong performance against Australia, helped them reach the Super 8 stage. That progress faded in the Super 8 phase, where losses to England, New Zealand and Pakistan ended their campaign.

The result shows Sri Lanka’s struggles in T20 World Cups, marking the fifth straight edition since their 2014 title win, in which they have failed to reach the semifinals. During Jayasuriya’s time as coach, Sri Lanka featured in 76 international matches across formats, securing 34 wins for an overall success rate of around 45 per cent. Ashley de Silva, Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Cricket, revealed that the board has started official talks with foreign coaching candidates.
