Will Jasprit Bumrah Play the Asia Cup 2025?

In what has been the latest development, it is learned that India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is all set to miss the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. The tournament will be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 9th to 28th September and will see eight teams participating.

However, India are likely to be without their premium fast bowler Bumrah, which means the bowling line-up will be inexperienced. Bumrah has been India's best bowler across formats and is probably the best Test bowler in the world right now. His ability to take the pitch out of the equation makes him such a threat to the opposition.

Jasprit Bumrah Asia Cup Update

According to PTI, it is the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) decision to allow Jasprit Bumrah rest during the Asia Cup 2025 as part of the workload management. This comes after the pacer played a vital role with the ball for his team in the ongoing Test series against the England.

It is learned that the BCCI wants Jasprit Bumrah to be fit for the home Test season, which will feature series against the West Indies and South Africa. There's a belief in the board that if he plays in the Asia Cup 2025, he might not be ready for the Tests, a format which he loves.

The reports added that BCCI are eyeing the New Zealand series in early 2026 to mark Jasprit Bumrah's return in the T20Is. This is because they want him to get in the rhythm of the shortest format of the game ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be played in February-March.
“It will be a tricky call, but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup,” a source close to the developments was quoted as saying by PTI.

“If Bumrah plays the Asia Cup and suppose India plays the final, no way he can play against the West Indies at Ahmedabad. Obviously the question arises, do you need Bumrah against West Indies, or he plays Asia Cup after a month's break and plays the two Tests against South Africa. That call, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will have to take," the source added.

Jasprit Bumrah Released from India Squad

Bumrah, who has battled quite a few injuries in his career, featured in just three games out of five in the ongoing series against England. Ahead of the series, it was already decided that pacer would play three games to manage his workload, keeping in mind the long-term thing.

Jasprit Bumrah, who played all five games in the test series against Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, got injured in the last game. He faced a back injury and as a result of that, he was out of action for around four months, missing the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as well.

Hence, keeping in mind that injury, he was asked to play just three games in the England series. His workload here was a bit high, too, as he bowled around 120 overs in the three games that he played. In the fourth Test in Manchester, he struggled in the second innings and was down on his pace as well.

Bumrah, who also ranks among the best bowlers in the world, was released from the squad, and he will now be getting ample of rest till the time the next Test series starts. India doesn't have any more games scheduled in August and will be next seen in action in the Asia Cup 2025.

If the reports are to be believed about his unavailability for the Asia Cup 2025, then he can get over two months' rest. This means that he will he there for the Test series against West Indies and South Africa, which will be part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. In the series against England, Jasprit Bumrah picked 14 wickets at an average of 26. He finished as the fourth leading wicket-taker in the series, picking two five-wicket hauls - one at Headingley in Leeds and one at Lord's Cricket Ground in London.
