Pathum Nissanka, Lahiru Kumara OUT: Updated SL Squad For 2nd Test Against WI

Sri Lanka has suffered a major setback ahead of the second Test against the West Indies, with four players ruled out of the match, which starts on Friday, July 3, in Antigua. Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, Ramesh Mendis and Pathum Nissanka will not be available for selection because of injuries and illness.

The visitors are already trailing 1-0 in the two-match Test series after a heavy defeat in the opening game. Nissanka has the potential to be one of the best Test batsmen in the world, and he opened the batting with Nishan Madushka in the first Test, struggling to make an impact, scoring just 2 and 3 in his two innings as Sri Lanka suffered an innings-and-217-run loss.

After the match, the opener continued to experience pain in his wrist. Following a medical assessment, doctors recommended surgery, which made him leave for the United Kingdom on June 30 to undergo the procedure.

Updated SL Squad for WI Test 2026

Four players have already been ruled out of the SL squad vs WI for the 2nd Test. Fast bowler Lahiru Kumara was part of Sri Lanka's pace attack in the opening Test, but his outing was cut short due to injury. After bowling just one over, in which he gave away four runs, Kumara felt discomfort in his right hamstring while beginning his second over and had to leave the field.

Sri Lanka Cricket later confirmed that scans revealed a Grade 1 hamstring tear, and the pacer is currently undergoing rehabilitation. Kumara's early exit left Sri Lanka with an inexperienced pace attack, allowing the West Indies to pile up a massive 626/9 in their first innings. Meanwhile, Vishwa Fernando remains unavailable for the second Test.

Although he showed signs of improvement over the past week, Sri Lanka Cricket stated that he has not recovered sufficiently to return to action. Off-spinner Ramesh Mendis also remains sidelined.
