What is Bronco Test in Cricket? How Will It Benefit Indian Cricket Team?

4 min
Bronco Test

The Indian Cricket Team has always promoted fitness among its players, irrespective of the format. Even in domestic cricket, the BCCI has been quite serious about maintaining strict fitness guidelines for the players throughout the season. Players like Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and many others have raised the standards for fitness in India, and emerged into one of the best fielders in the world.

Until now, the fitness levels of players were marked by the Yo-Yo Test and a 2-kilometre time trial. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir and strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux have introduced the Bronco Test for measuring the fitness of the players. The test was formed for football and rugby players to understand their fitness levels.

Now, the strength and conditioning coach, Le Roux, has insisted on going with the Bronco Test to measure aerobic endurance and push cardiovascular limits. The Bronco test focuses on the pace bowlers also, since it's strength training and they need it in the long run to bowl long overs, especially in Test cricket. Ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, all the players will have to go through the Bronco test for the coaches to get a better idea about their fitness.

What is the Bronco Test?

The new Bronco Test is specially designed to measure a player's stamina, speed, and cardiovascular conditioning since it's an aerobic running drill. The test will start with shuttle runs of 20, 40, and 60 meters, and then one set consists of running all three distances, and players are required to complete five continuous sets, totaling 1,200 meters, without rest.

As per reports, the primary goal of the Bronco test is to be done within six minutes. Only then will the players be considered to be fit. India's training coach Le Roux was the one who introduced the Bronco test in cricket as the players were spending more time in the gym. To avoid that, and for the pacers to do some running-based endurance training, this test was brought to light.

Since the Asia Cup 2025 is around the corner, many players have visited Bengaluru's Centre of Excellence and gone through the test. There are players like Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, who were injured recently, who most likely would have had to go through the test to get the fitness certificate from the trainers. While both cricketers are absolutely fit and have maintained good fitness as well, ahead of the Asia Cup, all players will have to give the Bronco test to pass the fitness test.
