According to a recent development by the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), right-handed batsman Shreyas Iyer will captain India A in the two multi-day matches against Australia A. The selectors have now given the Indian Premier League (IPL) captain of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) a leadership opportunity after he was recently left out of the Asia Cup team. This occurred amid persistent rumours that Shreyas may succeed Rohit Sharma as the next ODI captain.

With Dhruv Jurel as his deputy, Iyer will be leading the Indian squad, which includes players like Devdutt Padikkal, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prasidh Krishna, and Khaleel Ahmed. Following the first multi-day game, two players in the team will be replaced by KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj, who will be introduced to the squad for the second multi-day encounter.

Australia A tour of India 2025 will begin on September 16 and will conclude on October 5. The unofficial Test matches are scheduled for September 16–19 and 23–26 at Lucknow's Ekana Stadium. The Green Park in Kanpur will host the one-day games on September 30, October 3, and October 5 respectively.

On September 16, a few days after the Duleep Trophy ends on September 11, the first unofficial Test will begin in Lucknow. Selectors will likely reveal the team after the Duleep Trophy semi-finals on September 7, as the second red-ball match is scheduled for later in September.

Since 2024, Shreyas Iyer has not played for the Indian Test squad either. Although he has been one of the best ODI batsmen in the world since the last few years, he is yet to prove his red-ball credentials. His performance as captain of India A in the next two matches against Australia A will bode well for his prospects in the forthcoming home Test series against South Africa and the West Indies.
