WTC Final

England has hosted all the WTC Finals so far. The first three editions were all played in England. Now, the next three finals in 2027, 2029, and 2031 are up for grabs with both England and India in the race to host them.

England has hosted all the World Test Championship (WTC) Finals so far. The first three editions were all played in England. Now, the next three finals in 2027, 2029, and 2031 are up for grabs, with both England and India in the race to host them. According to reports, the final decision will be made next month in Singapore. The International Cricket Council (ICC) will announce the host countries during its Annual General Meeting (AGM).

India and England Compete for Hosting Rights of Upcoming WTC Finals

Indian and English cricket boards are both trying to get the hosting rights for the next three WTC Finals. According to a report by Dainik Jagran journalist Abhishek Tripathi, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is a top contender.

England and India are contenders for 2027, 2029 and 2031 WTC Finals,” Tripathi posted on X (formerly Twitter). “The ICC will announce the final decision at its AGM in Singapore next month.

Closing Quote

While India is trying hard, England may have the upper hand. A report by The Telegraph suggests that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has already been informed of the ICC’s plans. Recently, Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary, was appointed as the new ICC Chairman. That gives India more power at the ICC table. But still, England’s long cricketing history and neutral location make it a favourite.
Lord’s is seen as the most likely venue for the 2027 final. London is a global city and is easy to reach for fans and players from all over the world. However, some reports suggest that other northern venues may also be considered. This is because no Ashes Test is scheduled in northern England in 2027. That leaves room in the calendar for a big game like the WTC Final.

England’s Track Record as WTC Host

England has hosted all three WTC Finals so far, and each one was played at a different venue:

YearVenueLocation
2021Ageas BowlSouthampton
2023The OvalLondon
2025Lord’sLondon

The first final was held in Southampton because of COVID-19 restrictions. Lord’s was the original choice, but it was not possible at that time. In 2023, the final was moved from Lord’s to The Oval because of sponsorship issues. Finally, in 2025, Lord’s gets its turn to host the big event.

There are several reasons why England keeps getting to host the WTC Final:
• England is a neutral venue. The home team has never reached the final.
• The weather and pitches offer fair competition to all teams.
• Stadiums in England often get sold out, showing strong fan support.
• London is easy to travel to from most countries.

Will India Get a Chance?

It remains to be seen if India will get to host one of the next WTC Finals. India has world-class stadiums like Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and Eden Gardens in Kolkata. If the ICC wants to take the WTC Final to a new location, India would be a strong option. With the game growing in popularity, giving hosting rights to India could bring in bigger crowds and more revenue. The final call will be made in Singapore. Fans and officials around the world are waiting to see which country gets the honour.
